The threads about selling to asian consumers has me thinking about the logistics of selling live birds, possibly at a farmer's market.

A cage would be best to show off your birds, but to expensive to throw in with the bird. A cardboard box would be cheap, but you can't see the bird.
You could have a bigger cage as the showroom, and transfer them to boxes, but I would hate to chase an escapee around town.

How do you sell live birds, either on the farm or at a market?

We sell ours by placing ads in craigs list or local sale papers and also sell at a local farmers/ flea market. We have several big "viewing" cages that we use and once bought we pack them into carboard boxes.

Interesting note the people that buy them on the hoof around here care more about the weight and how filled out they are vice what the look like - that's tells you what they will use them for. Best sellers in order - Dark Cornish, Cuckoo Marans, Buff Orpingtons. When we take the DC's they are gone in no time.

I have seen live chickens at the Farmers' Market in fairly large cages. Upon a sale, the chicken was removed from the cage, then the legs were tied with a zip tie. and handed over to the customer by the legs.
