Selling my rooster - everyone interested wants to buy more than one?

I put my 1 year old rooster on craigslist. He is perfect for free ranging hens - superb guard rooster. we just have too many roosters though for our hens. I chose him to sell first, I don't want to sell the others yet. But every person who has expressed interest (3) all want more than one rooster? Why? What am I missing? Why would someone want multiple roosters on purpose? Are they planning on eating him and want more bang for their buck during the drive over?

Different people have different reasons. It could be either you mentioned. Maybe they want roosters for cockfighting. Maybe they want some for a breeding program, especially if breed was important when they talked to you. They may have a neighbor they want to really annoy by roosters crowing. Who knows why people do things? But my guess is either for eating or cockfighting.

If you sell a bird, you really have no say in what they do with the bird. Just as no one has any say in your birds. Possible uses do include feeding families or feeding other animals. Some may be used in other illegal activities. If you suspect that, you could report it. A very few will be used in flocks.

However, most roosters are considered a financial liability, as in you feed them and do not get eggs. Extra roosters, can be very difficult to get rid of and too many roosters can wreck havoc in your flock. So if you can sell them, I would, and if you have several, I would sell as many as possible. One really only needs a very few roosters.

Roosters are a problem that every chicken keeper eventually faces. Some people choose to cook them for their own family, as they put the money into raising them. Nothing dishonorable in keeping an animal healthy, safe and secure and a quick dispatch. Others find it difficult to do this, and sell or most often give away their extra roosters.

I'm lucky that near me is a chicken store where they owner basically takes birds on consignment he sells the birds and gives you either store credit or 75% of the earnings in cash. I sold my partridge cochin bantam roo for enough to get 2 runner ducklings and 8 bearded silkie chicks... I would recommend looking to see if you have any feed stores in your area that do something similar. It's worth a shot although I think I am just lucky to have a store like that in my area.

Agreed. Once a roo, or any animal for that matter leaves your property, you have no say in what happens to it. Sometimes, it's not possible to tell the gender of a chick until it's gained some size. By that point, there is, at least for me, a financial incentive to put a few more weeks of feed into those cockrels and harvest them for my own table use. Why spend all the time, energy, and money to raise up cockrels to feed some one else? I do occasionally give away a cockrel to a friend who wants a flock guardian. In that case, I'd rather give the bird away, if I know that it is going to be a flock master. But, someone who wants multiple cockrels, especially if they are Back Yard Mixes wants them for food purposes or for fighting.

I know - I agree. He has been sold to someone who wanted just one.

They have hens and wanted a rooster. I hope he's happy. I now am selling two more. A little sad, but I have to do what's best for the hens. Too many roosters isn't good for them. I was just curious why people would want more than one, other than wanting to eat them. Or fight them. The breed is backyard flock.

I think that level of interest is odd. Maybe it's just your area, and there aren't as many people breeding so there aren't as many excess roosters. However, I tend to agree with others, I think people looking for multiples were likely interested in fighting or eating.
I'm my area, there are roosters galore. Some people try to sell them. That usually doesn't work unless they are rare breed or very pretty. Coincidentally, a cockfight was busted a month or so ago with over 250 people in attendance. 95 roosters were siezed and euthanized.

Yup, it made me sad. I couldn't read the comments. People were calloused. Had it been a dog fighting ring people would have been outraged, but so many just view chickens differently.
This is why excess/bad/mean etc roosters at my place will live a fine life until they head to the stew pot, and I intend for them to never know it's coming. I'd give or sell one to someone I knew was raising chickens too if they really needed one. But I'll eat mine before they end up in some fighting ring.

Hi! I read your post and the customers that wants to buy more roosters..I have few roosters for sale also.. How can I contact them?
