Selling out due to price of feed

we had to sell all the horses, and now all we have is my chickens. Chicken laying crumbles has gone from $5.25 in April to $10.50 for a 50lb bag which last about 2 weeks.Hay has gone from $2.25 a bale to 11.00, so now i feed the chickens a slice of wheat straw from Lowes for 4.11 they seem to like it better than the regular hay, but the horses had to go.We're still in drought conditions in middle tenn:mad:

Wow, I wish I could find horses around here for cheap. They are a little cheaper lately, but still way up in the thousands! Right now a $1000 horse would be very appealing! You can hardly find one of those without some sort of problem.

Horses are still high here too. I'd actually love an old camp horse that I could ride once a week without it getting nuts. I have 5 of the things and they are too old or too. A saddle mule! I'd kill for a saddle mule. Love the way a long ears mind works. I've got a donkey and always wished he were bigger.

I've cut out extra trips to town. I grow most of my own food now. Nothing to put in an extra row of something. Gave up bantam chickens and went with egg and meat breeds.

Think it's time to revive the old idea of the victory garden.

He should be proud, he cared more about the horse, at 900.00 his horse didn't go to slaughter. At 25.00, that's where they were headed.

We have no horse slaughter in Ca. but even if we did it would be better that starving a animal. Though I would guess that they would end up in Mex. & I do believe in the "food chain" it better than suffering, I have seen more animals suffer out of people think, or trying to do "kindness" than abuse

&besides if it comes to feeding & careing for my family or a horse well I will pick my family hands down everytime, they are what is important to me

If I might make a suggestion, if you put her up for sale, you might also consider putting her on the Keeping a family cow board. They go nuts for family cows there and seem to be super concerned (like we are about our chickens here!). There's an 'auction' spot on the board you can place her. It's actually for sale ads, but they call it auction. Just a thought, unless you already have someone in mind for her.

I have enough grass growing on my property that it feeds the goats, ducks, chickens, goose and rabbit. I supplement their feed with just a bucket of "goat chow" in the mourning, and a few scoops of poultry feed for the rest (except bunny gets bunny food). I roughly spend about $30 a month for the lot. I gets eggs from the chickens, and eat some of them, and milk from the goats (I don't eat MY goats, only goats I haven't named!!) So what I pay in food for them, I make up in food for my family. I grow the veggies we use often, and shop in bulk stores for the "staples". The situation really stinks, but we can do it!! If anyone needs a place to let their horse graze in florida (Saint Cloud) I do have enough for a few more, and you would only have to provide any grain they eat.

I love my chickens but would love to have some livestock. We all "wish" don't we? So sad the government spent ..what was it...4.2 BILLION...NOT MILLION to send us all out a card saying we were getting a check from them??? Time for a "tea party"??

I think Sue lives in New hampshire.

I know! $25 would be crazy! I will probably head to auction during the summer and see what they are selling for there. Probably still much higher in other states though.
