I thought I’d share these pictures of my runner that sadly passed from being malpositioned & unable to internally pip.
I’m heartbroken, it devastates me to lose any animal & I tried my best to find the balance of trust in the process & intervention.
I witnessed her breathing slowing from outside the incubator, I tried to help by creating a small hole in the membrane near her wing, but it was too late, she had been struggling for too long & was exhausted. As you can see the yolk was not absorbed due to her not being able to internally pip & reach sufficient oxygen.
I’m sharing these as I couldn’t find a similar image of this type of malposition- it’s an advanced malposition 2.
I only opened the large part of the shell after her passing to work out what had happened, her beak and head were fully wedged between her chest, the yolk that was filling the surface of the air cell, her wing and foot.
If anyone has experienced this malposition & had a positive outcome please share. I’m beyond sad that I couldn’t help her. This is the first duckling I have lost.
My last hatch of 9 was 100 - they are now 5 weeks & thriving. But this second batch are my first runners.
