I placed an order online for four chicks, one Lavender Ameraucana and three Silkies. I received four chicks, three of them looked alike and one was completely different. I assumed the three that were the same were Silkies and the other was the Ameraucana. Fast forward three weeks and I’ve determined the one surviving Silkie (I lost two chicks the first night) is actually the Lavender Ameraucana. The other chick isn’t a Silkie so that leaves me with the question, what is she/it? I believe she’s a Cochin. She has five toes on one foot and feathers on her legs and feet but only the outer two toes. Not all. I have posted a picture of “Houdini.”

Black skin, five toes, and feathered feet are all common traits for silkies. Sometimes the tips of silkie wing feathers will initially look like normal feathers as they come in. But I think I see some silkie feathers at the shoulders and tail of your chick. Do you know what colors of silkie you ordered? I'm thinking you have a partridge. :)

So I ordered white Silkies. I need to take an updated picture of her. Once you said partridge, I went online and looked. She has the long thin feathers on her wings and it looks like she has some that are starting off the top of her head? The partridge are beautiful! She does look to have some of the coloring on her wing feathers. I’m impatiently waiting for her to grow so I can see what she turns out to be. But I don’t want to rush it cause she’s so cute.

Not sure but she’s pretty adorable!!! 😍
Thank you! I think so too. And she has such a funny personality. She kept escaping when we first got her so we named her Houdini. And now she’ll run over when I open the crate and turn her back to me and stand there. So I’ll pick her up and she’ll start carrying on like she’s scared but stops the second I cradle her in both my hands.

I know how you feel! I've done countless hatches but I'm still always excited to see how they turn out. At the same time, I love the baby stage, and they grow so fast. I'm currently on the edge of my seat waiting to find out how many cockerels/pullets I have in my current batch (only four, but still just as exciting).

It's possible that they accidentally threw in a partridge instead of a white. Where did you order them from? I'd love to see some updated pictures when you get them. I've always been fond of the partridge color myself. :)

Head feathers also make me think silkie. Those feathers are usually some of the last to come in, unless they're a crested breed. I think I see a walnut comb on yours too, although it's a little hard to tell from that angle. She also has that stereotypical silkie chick body shape, that I've learned to recognize after raising quite a few. At this point, I would be pretty surprised if she turned out to be something else. But she sure is adorable, either way. :love
