with the pop bottle waters use water bottles not the new style 'coke' bottles, the top of the bottle were the thread is, its to short and the waterer part will not stay on right. they fall off and leak. I use these in my breeder pens all the time.

Many people who sho crested breeds wait untill after the judging to water their birds. Avoids wet dirty crests & in the case of Silkies wet beards. Won't hurt them to go w/o water for a couple of hours. Many also wait to feed as well. A bird with a full crop is likey to be less lively than a bird that's looking for food.
Gentle combing with a regular plastic comb will remove the feather sheath you asked about.

Does anyone have any suggestions on what I could improve on? I know my splash boy has a pretty red comb. The poultry judge I taled to said it wasnt desireable, but I have to start somewhere.

If you do not have any pop bottle waterers, make sure you take away their water prior to the judging so they have time to dry out. A few years ago Dave Anderson came down to judge our National Western Stock show and my White silkie pullet won Grand Champion of Show at 7 months old. That is what he told me to do to avoid the wet beards.
