Separate duck and chicken coops w/ shared run

I feel like there are ducks out there that would take that as a challenge to find a way to jump up in the chicken coop and make a mess. While they don't like ramps, they can be taught to use them, and there are always exceptions.

Definitely no drakes. A rooster is fine with duck hens in my experience, my roosters are scared of them. How big is your run? It will get very muddy, very fast with a pool in there, unless it’s quite large. How many ducks did you want?

I only have chicken hens and I'm only looking at getting 5 duck hens too.

The run is about 180-sf.

Alternatively, I'm thinking of just having regular waterers in the run and letting the ducks onto the pool when I let them out into the yard during the day. The chickens are out about 6 hours a day, 5 days a week while I'm working, so the ducks would have time out to do ducks things throughout the week too.

That sounds good. Though you can’t just have regular waterers for the ducks, they’ll need a bucket or deep dish.

I have a self feeding rubber bowl I use for the chickens. It's about 6" deep and splash over collects in a secondary bucket and drains out of the run. Should work for the ducks.

No idea yet. Probably looking at a smaller breed since our chickens are small.

We're looking for a quiet, small, friendly duck. We haven't looked too much into the breeds yet.

Egg production is important to us, but we don't need anything crazy. Our golden comet chickens average about 330 a year each. We'd be happy with even just a dozen a week from the 5 we're looking to get.

If you want quiet ducks, Muscovy are the way to go! The hens are pretty small, but the drakes are large. All of the other duck breeds can be quite loud, but Muscovy stay quiet and aren't capable of making much noise.

Our local farmer has them running around. I'll go check them out!

We really like the looks of the runners. I'll start reading up on them too.
