Hi, I am almost finished constructing a small (4x6) coop for my 6 chicks. I only have to figure out the roost.. I have three Welsummers, one RIR, one Wyondette, and one Light Brahma. My kids picked out the last three breeds and I knew nothing about them until I researched after getting home from the feed store. It looks like my first five will be medium-largish (6-7 lbs?) but the Brahma is going to be a big girl (8ish lbs?). Do I need to put two separate roosts in the coop? I already made and installed poop boards and really would prefer to only have one roost because I don't think I could get two over the boards I put in. But how high should the roost be?

I know I could just do one low roost, but I understand they prefer to roost up high and I'd like them to be happy.

Thank you!

One roost will work just fine, mine is a 2x4 flat side up,it should be the highest level they can get to safely, typically above everything else or they may choose to roost on something you don't want them to.

no need for separate roosts, they'll establish their pecking order and top bird will roost where she wants, then on down the line

yep, they'll be just fine on the same roost! :) When we got our first batch of chicks (which were a variety of 6 different breeds), we put in one low roost and one high roost so they could choose for themselves- they all used the low roost as a step to get up onto the higher roost.

Thanks everyone! I just worried that one Brahma would be too heavy to get up high, but i suppose i could always rig up some sort of ladder for her if i need to.
