I just caught my pekin drake trying to mate with my cayuga drake. This is the first I have seen it, but he did it multiple times with me stopping him each time. My pekin is quite a bit larger than my cayuga, so he kind of throws him around like a rag doll. Obviously separating them would be the best option, and I have the means to do so. I would run a barrier down the yard of that plastic green stuff they use for temporary runs. Before I do this, is there ANY other things I could try to get this behavior to stop. I would rather not have a barrier in the back yard due to mowing, my kids, and the dog being able to freely roam, but if I have to I will. Also, will they be okay separated? They would be able to see each other still, but they would essentially be lone ducks. Also, would they still be able to slee in the same coop?

I don't know any more things to stop them but I think separating them would be fine!

Can you just keep one drake in a cage during the day instead of separating the whole yard off? Then you can alternate which drake gets to roam during the day and which stays in the coop.

I don’t have any hens, and I can’t get any hens because I can’t get enough for the both of them.

I think separating will probably be the way to go. I swear my pekin almost drowned my cayuga in the water bowl, because he couldn’t get out from under him. Would I need to change their sleeping habits too? They usually sleep together in the same coop. I have an “upstairs” to the coop that is shut off that I could put one in. Would that be sufficient?

I love these boys dearly, but they are gonna make me go gray! Looks like I will be working on a fence and a separate enclosure this weekend! If anyone has any ideas for a good enclosure, please send it my way!

The reason I say a separate enclosure is because I realized the top of the coop is closed off and there is like zero ventilation in there so I figured it would be better to build a new “temporary” enclosure until they can be placed back together. How long will they need to be separated
