All of my chickens run together...now I want to separate my New Hampshire to incubate. How long should I wait to start keeping eggs for incubation so that I don't get any mixed chicks? I know the answer to a turkey, but not chickens. I separated them on the eve of 10-20-08.

I read on another forum 3 weeks, but I wouldn't think it would be that long..At least I hope not. Any advice!?!

I usually wait a month to ensure they are pure from the breed I want.

I read on a turkey when they breed one time.. the hen will stay fertile for up to 10 days. I can't find that info on a chicken!!

I guess that I will have to be patient.

I have read chickens can stay fertile up to 16 days. I would go with Jody, and wait a month, just to be sure.

I know when you breed a chicken A. I. they say 10 days tops but probly 4 to 5 days is more like it. Do not know how that applys to natural breeding.
