Seperate Cages in Coop

Those are cool!

Can you share with us how you made them? Is the shorter section on each a nest box? If so, do you lift up the top to retrieve eggs? Forgive me for asking so many questions but those look like they would be easy to build. Just what I could use.

Sure real quick, as I don't want to hi-jack this thread. the smaller section is the nesting boxes. The lid lifts up and you get eggs. Best thing I ever did.

I made them out of pallets and shipping crates. I only had to buy hardware and screws. Busting up the pallets was some work, but this was more of a "bet I can do this" project than just build another coop.

Your not hijacking the thread! Dont worry!

I really like the idea of the mini coops!
If you dont mind me asking, do you have
any pictures of what they look like inside?
I may have to co pick up some crates and pallets!

I' ll see what I can do. The inside is open except for a 2x4 wood running flat wise down the middle for a roost. The small section is got either two or three nesting boxes. All I did was build a wall or two out of plywood. The crate and pallet sides were pretty easy. The front wall had to be built with pallet strips and I made a door that sides up and down with a rope that goes up to a eye screw in the roof and out to the back. I just pull the rope to open the door and let the rope go the close the door. The nesting boxes I had to do a litttle engineering as I added them to the structure. I framed it out and took pallet strips (or on the crates I cut one in half) and added it on to it. Then just built a lid out of either plywood or pallet strips, whatever I had on hand at the time.

Then I just placed it next to the run and cut out for the door. I don't have to go in the run if I don't want to. The floor pallet had close together wood strips so their feet won't fall through yet I could hose it out and the poo just just went through the cracks. I set them on blocks to keep the wood runners out of the dirt so they wouldn't rot so fast and if I had to rake out the pdd after awhile.

A little engineering but all in all pretty easy. It was time consuming as I figured it took about 9 hours apiece. But that included tearing pallets apart and using any wood I could use.

I am really, really proud of this. It is proof of what totally unskilled individuals can do!
My DD & I made this brooder room in our coop. Since our floor is cement, everything had to be anchored from the ceiling. We got some metal "do-dads" at home depot that allowed us to secure our vertical 2x4s to the cross beams. Then we attached boards horizontally at the bottom and center. We made a door using 2x2s. The door was covered with chicken wire. The rest is covered with plastic "chicken wire" which is soooo much easier to work with - no ripped hands!

When I told my best friend what we did, she asked "No injuries?"

I was really inspired by a video that someone posted on BYC - "Garden Girl" - DD & I watched it several times. It gave us courage to pick up a saw.
