September 2016 Hatch-A-Long

As long as the temp is OK don't stress too much about the humidity early on. You can mark air sacs later on and adjust accordingly. I would try to keep it above 25% but keep in mind the ambient humidity does effect it so it will not always be stable from day to day (your weather will effect the humidity) and then your humidity reader may also be inaccurate. . The actual humidity level is not the key factor (except from day 18 when moisture is important but even then people have different values they go for)- just that they have an appropriate air sac (too large= no room to grow, too small = not enough air to survive on when they pip internally).

This is a good read: https://www.backyardchickens.com/a/hatching-eggs-101

Being day 3 you should see signs of veining to indicate they are developing.

Good luck:) Let us know how they look when you candle them tonight.

This is so incredibly helpful thank you! I tried candling a few but since they are CCL eggs they are too thick and the eggs too blue or something... I could see some air sacs I believe but I saw no veins just too dark so till day 8 then I'll check again. XD I checked my thermometers max and min... The max was 101.3 at some point and I don't know for how long, such a mess and the lowest humidity was 17 ugh! (But as you said not the key to this so gotta ignore that :x) Now that I'm back I can keep it much more stable hopefully, but hopefully those few days didn't completely ruin my hatch.

I'll definitely check out the read, I'm sure it'll be super helpful! Thank you so much! I knew the whole after 18 to raise it up but all she said was keep it above 25, I thought in Oregon it'd keep it humid in there but guess not! Sorry I sound like such a newbie air head I'll let you guys know again on day 8 the progress unless anything else happens.

Ah yes, darker/ coloured eggs make candling much harder.

I am no expert- this is my first time hatching. I've just been reading a lot in the last couple of weeks :)

Hoping your hatch goes well :)

I have 6 more days to go checked eggs tonight and I know 30 of them are doing good a few are to dark to see. Can't wait til this weekend. Good luck everyone!! Happy hatching!

Man I feel so inexperienced for this hatch then. I knew everything from quails but I guess them hatching versus chickens is a lot different haha! But that's what this is all about gaining skills and experience I guess just should've tried to not stress so much!

I kinda just jumped into it with the chicken eggs this week! Never bretained much information from what I've heard poo! Hope you have a fantastic hatch as well, definetly post some pics if you ever get the chance! How far along are they and what kind if you don't mind me asking? :D

I am almost day 19. Eggs went into lock down yesterday. They are Australorp eggs. I had 12 but I think 2 are late quitters but I left them in just in case (they didn't smell).

I have my brooder set up and ready to go....

Managed to get my humidity up to 65% in the incubator (I was hoping for 70%) but it really didn't want to go any higher. Hoping it is still up there when I get home in a few hours. I added a sponge (under the vent area so I can get a straw in and get more water on it :)) Getting close now but its this waiting game. And now the humidity really matters so im afraid if it drops I wont know until too late. Nothing I can do about it though so just hope all goes well.

I certainly don't plan on staying at work any longer than I have to for the next few day though (Im a high school teacher so I dont usually leave straight away) :)

Come on chicks

Today ends my day one of being in god incubator. I candled a couple to see if sitting for the last two days (they are shipped eggs) helped to reattach them. I could one see one that still had floating bubbles but it did have an air sac in the big end. So fingers crossed.

this one has the floating bubbles.

This is my first ever attempt at hatching so I have done a lot of reading and will be asking lots of questions so please bear with me. I have only been in the chicken world since just after Christmas.

All the best for your hatch :)

What kind of eggs are they?

I am disappointed with my eggs. Today is day 5 and I candled the 6 la bresse eggs, it appears that only 2 are showing veining. I know it's common for shipped eggs to not develop well due to being shaken during transportation, but really disappointed that only 2 have made it so far. And who knows if either of those make it to hatch.
I went ahead and ordered another 6 from a different breeder, they should be here and ready to incubate by Thursday, which will be 1 weeks difference between the 1st batch going in. Will I be able to brood these chicks together if there is a week between them?
