Looks like i am going to get 5 out of 11 set. 3 marans 2 easter eggers. Im hoping one of the marans is a male.
are you looking to breed your marans? these are the blue copper?
I'm hatching for blue copper marans as well, I tried candling them last time (day 14) and it almost seems like each one had a large dark area and some veining i could just see barely.

Hopefully i'm not fooling myself LOL i'm sure only half will actually hatch, but i'd be happy with 3 as well! I'm hoping for all pullets

Ok I have 4 maybe 5 pips one is upside down. The reason I say may 5 is because one eggs has piped twice. Maybe twins? Has anyone had this before? One pip is in the middle of the egg and the other one is at the top of the egg. Really don't want to open incubator again to check had to open one time for the egg that piped on the wrong end. I know if it is twins they may need help any advice would be great. Thanks!

All six speckled Sussex are out now. I have taking a liking to one in particular, which means it is probably a boy

. I'm lucky like that. I gave two of them to my sebright and she's very happy. I wasn't sure how'd she respond, being a first time mama, but I think she likes it lol. I'm still waiting on the guineas. I'm so used to them hatching day 26. This is killing me.

I'm not really looking to start breeding them or improving on them. I hatched easter eggers as well. I am hoping on of my blue copper marans chicks is a rooster. Next year I will be trying to make olive egger with these chicks.

I was hoping to get some unrelated chicks from this hatch then breed them together for duel purpose. The eggs came from two different pens, but the ones still going all came from the same girl so will be full siblings.
I know people in the chicken world breed closely related birds, but I think if I get these to hatch I will still want to try and find other unrelated eggs or chicks.
That sounds wise. So sorry the survivors are all related, but glad you have some that are still looking good. Best of luck to you!

So here is a recap of yesterday and last night.

Around 8am yesterday I opened the air cells of 2 eggs that had been internally piped 18-24 hrs. The pure serama was in a good position for external pip, but never progressed. The serama X EE pipped into a space unable to reach shell. I diligently kept the membrane moist but tried to do little to help other than make sure the membrane wasn't stuck any place.

So the pure serama died in the shell. It never did anything more than the first internal pip. No big bleeds with the assist. I rolled the membrane off the top of the head and a leg before I went to bed at 2 am, but no luck. Autopsy this morning showed full absorption of the yolk.
So bummed.

The EE mix pulled itself out of the shell around 11pm but there were still active blood vessels and the umbilical cord was secured very well to the shell

yolk was absorbed.
I put corn starch on the one bleed I saw, then used medical tape to secure it in its shell but it was very active and I was still worried it would pull something out and /or bleed to death if I left it attached to the shell while I slept. So around 2 am after most of the veins receded I tied off and cut the umbilical cord. Not sure if that was the right call but it seemed the best decision at the moment.

Chick still got itself in trouble. It crawled to the corner of the incubator closest to the brooder and got it's leg stuck where the wire floor meets the wall. It's out now, but seems weaker than it was. I don't want to put it with the bigger chicks yet so I filled it's belly with electrolytes, and stuck it back in the incubator. After a couple hours rest. It seems mostly content to curl up against a la bresse egg that's internally piped, but if the chicks in the brooder get loud It's back scrambling against the wall.

New chick with 3 week old sibling

I'm going to set up a temp brooder for the new guys to use until they get their legs under them.
