Serama Hatch-A-Long!!

I had a couple of internal pips last night that had not pipped this morning. I opened them up and as I suspected, humidity was way too high for them out in the coop with all this rain. One is malpositioned but the other two were just completely filling the egg. They are doing well now. The two I can see are SO cute! They have black and white faces, so I am so excited to see them out!

Yay new babies! I second the call for pics when you get a chance!

I was going to be done hatching for the year, and then I set another 7 eggs from my choc/black pair because I'm a hatching monster. Oh well. Thank goodness I'm vending at the winter poultry swap in a few months 'cause I might have a few more babies in 3 weeks if this storm doesn't knock our power out on Saturday. :-/

I'm worried about loss of power as well. All my eggs due next Wednesday are still going strong, so it would really suck to lose them so close to hatch. I've prepared as best I can. well see what happens

I have a ton of Silkie eggs and about 10 Serama eggs in my incubators. I am trying to think positively. I have lost power before and eggs were fine. It usually is fixed pretty quickly. Once we lost power for 18 hours and I miraculously did not have any eggs cooking at the time.

I'm in an out lying area that is not priority to fix. We've only been here a year or so, but according to neighbors outages lasting nearly a week are not uncommon. Hope that doesnt happen this time around

Yikes! I hope that doesn't happen to you.

We got a generator this week, a cheap one at Harbor Freight (under 100 with coupon in case either of you are interested and have a Harbor Freight in your area). But, then I was reading a review on their website that indicated it might spike the voltage too much for using with delicate electronics, which to me includes incubators. So I need to do more reading. Maybe that person just had a bad model.

In the meantime, I have a broodymonster cochin who I've been lazy to break. I imagine if we lose power for more than an hour I will try giving her the eggs.

I think we are to late for this storm.

My third chick is not a malpositioned as I thought! It just had its wing over its beak but for some reason I couldn't tell. They are so freaking cute, and to think that some may be silkied too! I feel so lucky. :love

Wishing everyone the best for the incoming storm... Stay safe little eggs and birdies!!

OMG! I understand the cuteness overload! I Love the two EEs I have with muffs! They have to be the cutest chicks I have right now, but they are all so adorable!
I really like the fact that the serama and EE are so variable in color. Each chick is different.

How early can you tell silkied from non?

The EEs are SO cute! Those puffy cheeks are too much! I love the blue one too!

I have never hatched silkied chicks but I imagine you can tell in the first week or two, like the frizzles.

You should be able to tell by a week of age, maybe sooner. The feathers coming in on the wings will look more like long streamers than typical feathers. Here's what the wing will look like at around 1 week old:

Compared to this, a non-silkied sibling of similar color.
