I had never even heard of a Serama until I went to a poultry show a month or so ago. The people there said they would do fine with my other birds, and I got a good price (end of the show) so I bought a sweet little hen.
She was fine at first, acted fine, happy etc, except that, even after slowly introducing, my baby group was mean to her and she'd run away and literally stick her head in the shavings. I tried different ways of keeping her with them, hoping they'd get used to each other, and even bought a serama rooster in hopes that might help. It didn't. I don't want any birds in the house, or in cages, so I tried everything I know.
When I had to go out of town, I put her in a large bird cage and left her with a friend. The chain on top of the cage broke and the cage fell, with her in it. She seemed fine afterwards, that was several weeks ago. When we got home I put her back outside, and she still seemed fine, other than not being accepted by the young flock. I couldn't stand the bullying, she is such a sweet bird, so I have moved her in the house.
The past probably 10 days, she hardly gets up. I brought the little rooster in with her a few days ago, thinking maybe she was depressed. Yet, she still seems to spin around when she gets up, and won't roost on the bar. She almost appears to be lame somehow. But I can't pinpoint which leg it is. I will think I can tell, then teh next time it looks like the other leg or foot. She is eating fine and pooping fine. I have no idea how to tell if she is thin since I have never had a serama before. She pretty much stays in one place, no matter what surface she is on, unless she is getting to food or water, and she sort of limps/crawls along.
Anyone have any advice? Could she have a parasite that makes her act this way? She was outside with the other (young) birds in the "safe" pen, which had straw on dirt/mud. Or does it sound like a muscle or bone issue? Any help is appreciated. She is just such a sweet, tame bird. I'd like to help her if I can.
