I'll admit, there is a novelty to it. I really like Seramas, and I like blue eggs. But Im against random crossings. (Most people dont keep good records or have the facilities) Im really on the fence about things like this. If the birds were accepted by the APA, and there were more of them all over the US, with quality, then I can see where people would be interested in crossing, but really right now we need all the breeders we can to just raise pure Serama with great type!
If you were going to do it, you would need to really keep good records and be prepared to cull cull cull cull cull cull cull! You'd have to start with some seriously nice, proven seramas.
Its hard to keep Serama type in crosses. Heck, Its hard to keep good type in pure Serama!
I'd say if you were continuously breeding, plan on putting at least 2 years into it to get a start.
Most breeders have a problem with crossing, because some people doing this do not do the research, lose alot of viable genes, and sell the junk crosses to make money, and add those bad genes back into the Serama gene pool.
I have thought about how neat that would be, and spent a lot of time searching for the smallest Ameraucana bantam pair I could find that laid the brightest blue eggs. I have a lot of hens that lay tan eggs, and I think the crosses would lay green. I do have a few hens that lay white, and I think that may give blue eggs, but there are lots of genetics involved with colored eggs that I have not researched enough yet.
I found there is a guy already with this "Serama blue-egger" project, and If I were ever interested, I would prefer to pick his brain first. It is really a lot of work to do something like this seriously.
Like Ondra said, I like my colored egg laying broodies. Im thinking of crossing them with silkies the next generation.
I have a SilkieSeramaCana that is my favorite. Big enough to cover a decent amount of Serama eggs, lays colored eggs to tell them apart and looks different with her 'hairdo' so no one confuses her as a (terrible serama typed) breeder.
OR... Think I may cross my silkie with Ameraucana, and then maybe Serama the next gen. I love colored egg broodies. It makes life easier!
