I am a first-time chicken-keeper. I haven't gotten my new chicks yet because I'm worried the larger chickens will pick on the Serama I am hoping to get. IT'S DRIVING ME CRAZY!!!

You could make the serama a housepet that's what they were bred to be in Malaysia. They accept confinement well but, it's better to have two so they won't be lonely. You could post on the American Serama thread and see how they raise them with other breeds.

what other breeds do you plan to get? Are they all large?

My friend has 4 house chickens, a mixed silkie special needs rooster, two serama hens that bully the larger rooster and the dog, and a silkie pullet that the seramas attack. Actually the silkie picked out a different room of the house because she doesn't want to be near the others. The dog has been around many chickens over the years - and is very tolerant. He's peke a poo but looks more like a cocker cross. He's short but big around and fully packed. The serama girls steal his food, sometimes from his mouth, take over his bed when they go broody.

Yet when visitors come to her house the roo and the seramas run and hide behind the couch and won't come out till the people leave. I don't know if all seramas are that cocky or if it's because there are two of them and the bolster each other. Incidentally, the seramas started with pea sized eggs that quickly got to be a decent size considering how small they are. They watch tv at night sitting on either side with my friend. She says when their feet get cold they run to sit on her lap.

To me they look like feathery bowling balls.

Peke a poo? Sounds adorable! My cats would kill and eat any bird they could get their paws on.

<-- Now pretend that's a cat and you'll get the picture. Oh, and add fangs.

Yeah, I'm getting some big ones. Will that be a big problem?
