SERIOUSLY pecked hen!!!

I tried to flush the wound with CVS saline solution but she shook it right off. At least got some on there I applied a LOT of Neosporin with pain relief on top. It seriously is her skull I can see so I'm going to take her to the vet at 11:30...i just dont want an infection to settle in. The rooster is leaving Thursday! She will remain in her nice cozy quiet place far from him!

Thats exactly what I see in her neck. He backed off a week ago but yesterday this happened....seriously I believe he wanted to kill her. So Mr.Rooster is going bye bye to another family this week.

I had the same exact thing happen to one of my hens! The roo beat her up bad in the same spot that u could see the “ligaments” in her neck move! I got her nearly healed and then i put her back in the flock! (Worst idea ever) and the roo beat her up again only worse! And after a couple of days she died i suggest don’t put her back in the flock!!

I hope that you've informed the people the rooster is going to, of the reason you're getting rid of him... Otherwise, you are just foisting your issue onto someone else to deal with & worse, not telling them what to expect. No place in this world for a mean roo.

I hope your hen heals up, and she should, provided she's not attacked further.

I hope he is going in someones freezer.
No way should a rooster EVER do this kind of damage to a pullet/hen he is supposed to be protecting.
I hope she makes a full recovery.

I had a turkey scalp a cockerel's head, he healed well but is still bald. All I did was put ointment on it.

I might add some new pictures of how he looks now when I get home. He has gotten big and looks very pretty. Still bald though.

The neosporin should not contain pain meds. Anything including “Caine” is toxic to chickens.

You might want to wash this off. After cleaning, keep Vetericyn sprayed on the wound.

Good work. Heads up, high levels of the “Caine” medications can be toxic. Many people say it’s better to use neosporin WITHOUT pain relief, though I have yet to see that substantiated.

The family is going to "process" the rooster. Its weird he has never attacked a human.

BTW, I had a rooster, not a cockerel a mature rooster, kill a hen and a pullet before. I have also seen a rooster hurt a hen when he was trying to kick off another rooster while mating. Roosters usually correct themselves and I have never had one give a hen the same injury twice. The rooster that killed those girls was not human aggressive either. He was a two year old EE, the first hen he killed was by accident, a cockerel was mating with the hen and he tried to spur the cockerel but hit the hen right behind the head and snapped her neck. She was dead in seconds. The second time was nearly a year later, he got beaten up by a younger rooster and got aggressive with his mating, he gave a pullet a head injury and she died a few days later.
That rooster has never tried to spur another rooster while mating after he killed that hen. It is like he knew what he did. He also never forcefully mates anymore after he killed the pullet. I would recommend you kill him though, I kept mine for 2 reasons. He is an EE and he has genetics for blue eggs, his kids lay blue and green. Also, my flock has been struggling with Marek's for several months and oddly the EE's kids have never showed and symptoms or died from the disease. So even though he has killed two girls I decided to keep him, he has only produced 11 kids and all 11 were produced this year and are still alive. The other top rooster has produced almost twice that and has 2 healthy kids that have not died from Marek's. I plan to only hatch his kids next year.
