Set eggs 3/5. Looking for others to hatch with!

Yeah, my DH seems to think this will be the only hatch I do, LOL. It is way to addictive. He should be happy, between me making dolls and baby chicks it distracts me from thinking about that one more baby I want

I've noticed chicks are a baby replacement for some of us around here. Too funny! I was starting to want another little one until I hatched out only one chick. The constant care of it and the screaming it did instantly cured me.......now when my DH comes around I run.....fast.

I did make this bator from one of those red $18 igloo coolers from Walmart. The baskets are for breed ID, since it is the first hatch ever from the new coop, I want to make sure I know what the babies look like. I also went to the crafty section at Wamart and got the colored Velcro (the kind that sticks to itself ) so I can band their legs when it is time to transfer to the brooder. I cut them in half long ways then made little 1.5" long strips. I think I am ready to go.

I would realy like to know if it works for you. I have a homemade bator and I'm still out on it. If yours works, I would definitely switch over. Would you be willing to tell me how you did it. And I too love how you separated the eggs. How many can you fit in one basket. I need something like that in three weeks. I have BBS from two different pens, so if I kept them separate I would know who was who and then could band them too. And then I have porcelain and lavendar, but would like to know which is which when they're young. That's going on the assumption I can get them to grow.
Do you have a fan inside of your bator? How many eggs can you put in there?

When I clean it out after this hatch I was thinking of taking it apart and taking pics and maybe a video of putting it back together. I am so wanting to build a cabinet incubator... Everything in the house makes me think... I wonder if that can be converted, LOL.

As far as the baskets, the small one looks like about 6, maybe 7 to give room to hatch, and the large one has a dozen with a bit of room to spare, I could maybe get another 6 in it and leave hatching room. And I made a sort of hinge on one side with 2-3 zip ties and on the other side 1 to hold it shut.

Ahhhhh, thank you my friend for the "velcro" suggesstion! I've been using tiny rubber bands that are really too big until their feathers grow over and "hide" them. Then you have to remove and re-position them above the leg feathering. I don't want to buy a huge bag of leg bands nor do I want to use zip ties (which I would have to buy also). I like the velcro idea and am hoping my Walmart has a variety of colors.
Hmmmmmm, maybe I should just use yarn or something I've already got (which could just be trimmed away as they grow. Anyway, thank you for getting me to think "out of the box"!

Your welcome, the pack I got has 6 colors in it. I think it is for like holding PC/lamp cords and wires.I searched all over the store, but it was with the velcro you sew onto stuff.

You have great ideas. I am going to look for the Velcro at my store.....need to figure out how to print the calendar and find myself chicken jails.

You should be able to save it to your PC, then print. I giggle everytime I read chicken jails, LOL.
