Let me just say to everyone....ARGHHHHHHHHHH!!

Every time I have a hatch...I have to be at work! Grrr...I have tried to get it timed right and they just seem to want to hatch overnight when I am gone.I would not care so much except there is no one up all night (naturally,only us fools working nights do this

) and the humidity fluctuates with no one around. Fortunately tonight, my DD was watching for a while and she did as I instructed and pulled a vent plug out but then taped it halfway over so it is SUPPOSED to stay around 65%....I had one actively trying to hatch right before I had to leave!!

The humidity is jumping around and I know when they start hatching , it can be like popcorn, I am so worried the humidity will spike while I am at work...I just hope my plan works. With the vent plugged...the humidity (with one hatching chick) was jumping up to 74 %, so with me not there, I'm thinking it will go through the roof if I leave it in and all of them start hatching....so I want to keep it low. That's why I had her put tape over the vent hole, covering half, it seemed to be staying at 64%.

So hard to know what to do when you aren't home...Hope for the best for the little guys!

At 10:15 pm I had 4 pips and one actively hatching...DD says it looks blackish red...but it's still wet yet

I'm sorry, it's not showing up. The blood that was ON the shell has disapated. There is still blood on the membrane. Mostly I only see it as the chick is breathing and the membrane is moving in & out.

From what I can tell...it looks good.I have had some do that too...little bits of blood but they are pecking around in the backyard now.

My little chicks are drinking water while I am there, I am WAY too nervous to leave it with them unattended. Can they get by alright without water at night?

Just got home from being away from the weekend. Came home to chirping and peeping. So excited. I can count 5 pips so far of 37. It's day 20 here for me. One of the holes is big enough to at least see some movement inside and to see one little beak. hoping they save some action for the morning when we are awake!

You can and should leave the water for them. If you are nervous about them drowning in it...fill the bottom where they drink with small stones or marbles....and put the water away from the heat source so they are not encouraged to sleep by it. They really do need water 24/7 right now.

Don't have marbles and am not going to dig through 1+ feet of snow for rocks..hmm. Will they be fine with the chick waterer though, it seems kind of deep.

My last chick is acting sort of listless. It was like this earlier, then perked right up and is now back to it again. Sigh.

Why not??

What kind of waterer is it? You can use anything like stones or marbles to keep them from being able to fall asleep in it. I don't use them myself anymore. I have had no problems just putting the water up on a block of wood so it is a bit higher and keeping it away from the heat.

Do you have any vitamin/electrolyte to put in the water?? Or save -a -chick?
