Set Jan 29, Hatch Feb 19/20 Join Me!

Milleryard- I'm not sure what makes an egg go bad... But now I want to candle my eggs to see if any of mine are rotten! Hmmm... Day 5 instead of 7 for candling... I don't know if I can hold out til friday! Its killn me!

7 days is a short time period to already have rotten eggs.

I am anxious to candle, too. I was going to wait 10 days but I will candle Saturday which is day 8.

I made a candler from a cardboard box and a lamp fixture that is (was) a lamp with a canning jar lid for a base. I have a 75W bulb in it and cut a quarter-sized hole in the end of the box. It should work ok as long as the room is dark.

I'll be candling soon too. I'm not sure how well I'll be able to see anything inside those dark maran eggs. Couldn't see much inside when I candled them to make sure the air sac was looking good.

Ok... so I did it. I candled...

I couldnt help it! I did it very quickly... just a quick peek for veins. I have 38 eggs set. Looks like out of all of them... maybe 23-24 are developing. It was hard to tell on a few. Looks like maybe 2 or 3 may be quitters. 7 or 8 (at least) are clear. I didnt really count how many are actually developing but it was more than half. Not so good, I know... but some of them are test eggs, and the 8 out of my coop are from a really young hen, and only 2 of those have veins. The others are shipped eggs. All in all... I will just be happy if I can get at least ONE dutch. I left them all in for now, and I'll candle again at 10 days. I'm still pleased... atleast some are developing... better than none.

I tried to candle yesterday. I had made a candler from a cardboard box and a regular lamp with a 75W bulb. The light isn't bright enough. All my eggs are either brown, green or blue. I was able to see what appears to be a shadow or a dark spot in one location in many of the eggs but I am still not sure.

So, I am going to go to the hardware store and buy the brightest LED flashlight I can find and try again in a few days. For now I also let all of them in the incubator.

Candled last night. Of the 15 eggs, 6 of them are developing.

My Rhode Island Red rooster is young, just recently noticed him actually doing his job. So I am starting a couple more of his next week.
Barred Rock and Barred Easter Egger are all developing
Buff Orpingtion - 1/2 of them are developing.

The temps have been rather cold here in Maryland.
