Set some eggs just now, due date 20th July.... anyone else setting just now? Hatch-Along

I did hear that you can go longer than 14 days for storage... I am too "chicken" to try it.... I did find another clutch of eggs -- 16!!!-- in the bushes yesterday, no hen in sight, so I did the float test and all tested out fresh.... (we used up 4 yesterday and they were fine)..... But I think I will eat this batch, its too nerve wracking hatching out (my 2nd broody was off her nest this AM taking a dust bath, I have NEVER seen her off before, so I am crossing my fingers she will get back on)... Its day 15 for us... EEEKKKK...
Oh maybe she wanted to make sure she was all clean before the babies hatch?

We're rolling into day 16 this afternoon! Our chicks might hatch the same day! woohoo!! exciting

Oh that would be great! She is back sitting tight, just wish they would hatch before I go outa town, I like to be on hand to clean up any unhatched eggs and make sure the chicks dont fall out of the nest box....

I have an appt. an hour away on Friday, but I might just reschedule (not that big of deal) because I have a feeling I need to be here. My neighbor lost 3 out of 5 pullets (2 were taken from someone or something, and the 3rd she had to put down because it had all sorts of problems.) so I would like to stay home to keep the humidity up (been having issues with it) and make sure everyone is hatching ok. Since it's my first hatch I don't think I should be gone, if I had a broody though; completely different story... my only concern would be fire ants - we have a lot out here in NC and they can show up virtually anywhere. Do you have fire ants where you live? I lived in Sac worked all over N. Cal (Roseville, Lincoln, Granite Bay, Auburn, Forest Hill, Loomis, Grass Valley) for awhile & don't remember any fire ants.

Well yes its a broody but its the Hen that lost her clutch last time to another hen (who is raising her chicks) and one chick did get stuck trying to leave the coop after its mom (and later died)-- so just all sorts of things can go wrong....No worries about ants though we have little black bitey ones but no fire ants so far -- we are up past Nevada City-- and so it does get still down in the 60s at night (cool enough that a chick that falls out of the nest box(they are 2 ft up) wont make it thru the night)-- she does have 6 eggs, hoping we get a few out of the clutch...

Bad chicken! Lol! That is sad, hopefully she's a better mother this time & protect her babies. I'd much rather let a broody do all the work & whatever happens - just happens.. Incubating is stressful. Last night I was getting them ready for lockdown & I saw some eggs wiggling around, candled a few & saw them trying to pip internally. I check the temps & humidity every 3 hours at night. Well it got down to 35% at some point. I'm hoping I didn't kill any of them. I have 18 eggs now, one had veins around day 12 but now they're gone. Bleghhh I don't even want to open it.

Yeah I hear you- I dont think I am cut out for incubating too nerve wracking for sure....
I do kinda want some geese (someone told me they actually lay more eggs as they age instead of less like chickens) and I am wondering about sticking fertile goose eggs (just a couple ) under my next Broody)-- Def letting a Broody do the work (as inexperienced as mine are) is what I have decided to do (spending last summer Brooding indoors with day old chicks was enough for me)!

Hi! I have a group of 6 pharoh quail hatching now, its not going well so far :-( , and 11 chicken eggs due the 21st. They started out under 2 mamas. Then one gave up so the other one took over all of them. Then a week later she gave up on them too! Soooo they are in my incubator now.

alright, I just went in lockdown mode! hopefully they all hatch by the 20th, last night I saw them shaking the eggs. today, no movement. hopefully they're in pipping mode Good luck everyone

In lock-down over here now. Only one egg viable I reckon, but left the other 2 in there anyway - not smelling so hopefully no explosions! Hoping it hatches as per it's calendar - I will have a house full of kiddies on Saturday and would be nice for them to see it.

Goodluck everyone!
