Sibone, I appreciate the hug in your sig line! Thanks so much.
Nugget was on the eggs all day. This afternoon, I noticed when she got up to eat and drink, she had added her own egg and a huge glob of poop, attached to the egg, to the pile.
Removed the egg and the poopy straw, don't think it really got on the other eggs. I wonder if she'll continue to sit. I recall that other broodies have laid one or two eggs after they began sitting, so hopefully, that's all it is with Nugget.
Nugget seems to be snapping out of it. Maybe it was too soon to separate her, darn it. Her eggs were slightly scattered and some cool to the touch, my DH said. May have to pull her out, toss the eggs and start over when she's really ready or when someone else goes broody. I think it was the strange surroundings mostly. She is definitely showing all the broody signs, even now when I pick her up. Trust me, I know Nugget well and didn't mistake the signs, but perhaps she wasn't quite there yet. My fault.
She's making me nutso today! She wanted out. She got out, pooped a mountain of broody poop, screamed at me, then went back into her pen and sat off the eggs.
In 15 minutes or so, she snuggled back on them and did that little dance trying to get comfy. So, she really is broody, but why she's not sitting tight, I've no idea. It's pretty cold, too, so I hope the eggs didn't get too chilled to hatch. I removed Meg's egg, though, since it was quite cool to the touch and I wanted to be sure Nugget was really comfy, in case she's getting off because she has more eggs than I gave her last year-maybe she thinks there are too many? Who knows!
i feel your pain speckled hen. i have a broody golden laced wyandotte been broody for about 3 weeks . she just finnally decided on monday to get serious about it and stay on a nest of eggs. she is a first time broody a year old in april . so we will see if i have any chicks on march 15th or so. good luck.
My blue barred EE pullet, Riley, is also broody, and coincidentally, she lives with the Delawares and the front storage area of the Del coop is where Nugget is. She hasn't sat tight on a nest yet, but boy, she has the broody screech down pat!
well the Buff orpington Willow is sitting tight. As you know Cyn. I just stuck some eggs under her Mon. eve. I have no idea if any are fertile. I just felt sorry for her Sigh...... Some of the eggs I have broken to eat have been fertile but some do not look that way. I have the young Splash orp. He is doing his deed so lets hope they will hatch. At least a few anyway.
I have a question. I let her set on the nest she is on. If I move her later after they pip will she still stay with her eggs and chicks. I have not gotten a place ready yet? Health reason have hampered me so far. Later this week I will try to start getting the area ready. I want to move her then but am afraid too??? This Is a new area for me. First broody. Gloria Jean
