Set two eggs under a broody on Feb. 10th Join in! (Pics)

Exciting news! I'm on day 5 and I candled the eggs tonight and all 4 are viable! Yes, I snuck into the coop and pulled the eggs out (I thought 2 were dead so wanted to check ... I had exploding eggs on my mind and couldn't bear the thought of stinky hens!) Daisy and Lily didn't seem to mind and went right back to sleep. They are sitting on two eggs apiece. Now that I know the eggs are okay, I won't be candling for awhile! This is nerve wracking business! How are you doing ScratchesWithChickens ... and how's Sweetie?

(Thanks for the welcome Fluffy Puffy)

I'll try to remember to candle Sweetie's adopted d'uccle eggs tonight and see if I can maybe even get a picture. Besides that she's sittin' fast on those eggs! I had to change out some straw she made a mess of yesterday. I moved her and the eggs onto a temporary nest in a shallow box and when I came back from taking the dirty straw out she had hopped off and left me the biggest nastiest poo to clean off the carpet. Bleh!

I forgive her though, at least it wasn't on the eggs!

Our cochin became broody over everyone's eggs last spring so I bought six green ones locally and put them under her. I was worried that they weren't warm because I thought they should always be kept warm, but she was all happy and 4 of them hatched, which is how we got our mutt, who lays green eggs now. Two of the eggs were pecked open by the other hens and died, so we moved her to her own small coop.

That's hilarious ScratchesWithChickens! Sweetie left you a little "gift" for cleaning her nest! Hope the candling tonight went well. Can't wait to see pics!

Harleena, I heard that cochins are great brooders too! Any green eggs incubating?

Yesterday morning I was startled awake by Sweetie when she flew into the living room squawking her little head off as she landed on the back of the couch. She was frantic so I put her outside with the rest of the chickens. I went into the back bedroom where I was keeping her and her adopted eggs to see what was going on. To my dismay I found wet poo on some clean laundry, all over the eggs and in the big tub she was in. She had knocked over her water too. I candled the eggs and it didn't look like there was anything going on in either, I didn't bother to take any pictures. I have some of the same eggs in my Brinsea so I candled one of them to compare and even though they are three days behind Sweetie's eggs they definitely showed life. Now she's out with the other birds after starting a couple fights with her sisters and flock mates. Still broody, trying to sit on infertile eggs. I might still try give her a couple eggs from the incubator when it's closer to hatching. Maybe even slip a newly hatched chick under her, I dunno.

How are things on your end?

Aww Sweetie! And poor you for having to clean up that mess

! Their once-a-day poop is pretty putrid, isn't it? Yuck

! Sorry to hear about the eggs. I guess Sweetie had other plans. It still would be nice to see if she successfully incubates some. My hens are first-timers and I think they are doing pretty well. They both became broody at the same time and steal each other eggs so I never know how many will be in each nest when they get up each day. I candled 2 of the 4 eggs last night (I was trying to let them be but my curiosity got the best of me) ... and the embryos were wriggling about. Hearing about your experience, I hope Daisy (blue) or Lily (white) keep it up. I would be so sad if the chicks don't make it. I guess I have around 9-11 days left!

I hope you'll consider giving Sweetie another shot but whatever you do, would love to hear about Sweetie's adventures. She seems like a handful ... that pretty one! LOL

Aww! Daisy and Lily are sooooo adorable! I can't wait to see the little ones they hatch poking outta their momma's fluff! lol Between the two of them they should be able to pull it off, right?

It seems Sweetie's white sister, Sleepy, has also decided to go broody. lol Now I don't know what I'm going to do! My boyfriend came in earlier to tell me he'd been spying on the chickens and he saw something that topped all the crazy things we've seen our chickens do. Sweetie and Sleepy where walking around the yard all puffed out with their wings to their sides cackling away and pecking any other chicken that even looked at them funny. A squirrel squeezed under the fence and started stuffing it's face at their feeder and before the squirrel knew what was happening he had two very irritable broody bantams tearing at him! Serves that thief right!

I can't believe I missed that!
