Midget, you are echoing some of my experiences. This is my 3rd hatch in my homemade incubator. I finally found a flashlight that will penetrate the blue eggs ( at five below, for $5). I finally have confidence in my incubator ( I no longer get up every 2 hrs at night to check the temps) , I feel like I have its little quirks figured out. I am hand turning, do you have a turner? Good luck, especially with your shipped eggs. Have you tried hatching them upright in an egg carton? I am trying that this time. Lord knows I can't do any worse on the shipped eggs, than the previous two hatches. LOL.

I put 24 brahma eggs in yesterday! I can't wait for little chicks!!!

It seems like no matter what I use to candle the eggs I can never see anything for 6-7 days on my brown ones.

Great! Glad we are learning together!

I have only used the egg carton method - I heard too many stories about the eggs getting kicked around. It works well - but don't use an 18 carton. The chicks in the middle row struggle to get out.

I have a turner. It's just a board that I twist from the outside - side to side tipping. It works great. Then for lock down I remove it all together.

I'm hoping for my shipped eggs. I am waiting until day 7 or 8 to candle for the first time. I probably wont see into them because they are so dark.

Heck - I'm having so much fun with this I just today built a grow out pen so I can keep the new chicks moving from the incubator to the small brooder to the large brooder to the grow out pen to the main coop! I've got a real production now!

I have my production stock - & the mixed breed birds and now I'll have 2 pure strains that can mengle with the rest, but when I'm ready for more hatching eggs I'll have to keep them seperate. May need another coop???

Chicken math strikes again!

Hi there I also set 18 eggs on Sun the 20th 7cream brabanters 4Amaraucanas 6 Marans and one from my own chickens just to see
if I get something. Good luck to all of you

Well I candled tonight, I know I am rushing things a bit, but I just love watching them grow!

I can't resist candling every few days.

I could see little toes in the batch of eggs due to hatch first, they are seven shipped Ameraucana eggs which I set 10 days earlier, they had some messed up air cells, I tossed two with blood rings, the other 5 are doing great and will go into lockdown Monday. My 13 locally purchased Ameraucana eggs are looking great

, 11 of the eggs are definitely showing a good web of veins

, I think one is clear, and I thought I might of seen something in the last one, so I am going to give it a few more days.

How about everyone else? Has anyone else candled yet? How's it going?

Can't wait to hear the news?

I was tempted to candle today - but - Im cooking BC Maran's. They are so dark that I really need to give a couple extra days to be sure I'm not just looking at my thumb.

OK - I couldn't stand it any longer. We are on day 7 right? I candled my shipped half way across the country BC maran eggs a minute ago. 1 was without a doubt scrambled. so 13 left. of those several had clear vein development & several had just all over darkness. 2 or 3 I just couldn't tell what they had.

So 13 still cookin' Here's hoping!
