Setting eggs 6/11 and 7/4 - Join me!

*ties my own hands down and out of my incubator*

Why? Candling fever. I need to NOT candle again till oh.... Friday. No, Thursday. That'd be day 8. I candled a couple of my eggies just a moment ago and the first looked awesome..all veiny and pretty. The second one gave me a bad feeling..."awww that one quit early" I thought. Then it did a little mamba in there...as if to say "no, watch me shake my tail feathers... or what will BE my tail feathers!!' I took paws off and just turned the rest. Someone sit on my hands for me.

They are looking good though... I am THRILLED. Just very very little kid-like in my candling zeal
I could not be trusted to sit on your hands- that would leave mine to be sneaking peeks to see what I could see. So far I've done okay- very quickly snuck a look at one last night (that looked good in my very unprofessional opinion), but I'm really trying to hold off a few days!

I candled today...I really should have held off, but I was too curious. It is day six, and I pulled out two obvious quitters with blood rings. Four have easy to see embryos that are moving about. The others I'm unable to see through, or I don't see anything. Those can stay in there for now. I'm going to try to sit on my hands until at least day ten before looking again.

Well..so much for waiting. I came in to get ready for bed and check the 'bator temp since I turned the a/c on. I smelled something coming out of the vent, and had to smell all of the eggs that I was unsure about earlier. I found the culprit and took it out to the trash.

Some of the eggs are really thick in the middle, so I have no clue. I wish I could see better. If we only get a few, that will mean another hatch after this one.

I Also did a little candling.... Blue laced red Wyandotte's look great... As always.
My Maran are to hard to tell. The shell is to dark. I guess I will have to wait to be surprised.
I only checked a few of the Swedish Flower Hen, one of the eggs I checked look good. The other was iffy. I will give them a few more days to develop....
Good Luck Everyone. :). Molly

Looks like a lot of us have that "cant keep hands off" problem. I candled a couple at day 6 (only because these are my neighbors eggs and he isnt too sure on fertility). Then candled at day 10 and out of 48 only discarded 9. So fertility is better than we thought.

Question for everyone for opinions .... I dropped an egg on carpet but still put a crack in it on the pointed end. I sealed it up with candle wax as best I could. There was a developing embryo just before I dropped it

. Should I wait a few days and candle it again to see if its still moving or just pitch it now ?

Welcome Winkler! And don't worry, you aren't behind :) I haven't even set my second batch of eggs yet, so the fun shall last a long time!

DD- I ended up buying a Little Giant one from TSC near my house... but I really didn't like it. The bottom is about an inch tall >:| No room for peachicks or turkeys to stand! The bottom also didn't fit my hovabator turner (what the heck guys, the incubators are practically the same size, cut us some slack... the turner was 1/4 an inch too big to fit). So, instead of buying a new turner... I set the top of the LG bator on top of the bottom of my hovabator bator and made sure it could hold temp. So far, it's doing better than my hovabator used to, and if the seal isn't exact, there's a little more airflow. *shrug* We'll see how it works in less than 2 weeks!

I did candle 3 of the button quail eggs last night (because light knows I can't keep my paws out of the incubator). I went for the lightest of the eggs (since their shells are so dark) and I think I could see the dark forming along the sides as the membranes thicken :D So at least something is growing in a few of them. Commence more waiting!

Also- does anyone here know why I am not getting any subscription or PM emails? This ever happened to anyone? Tried unsub and resubbing to threads and changing my PM preferences back and forth... but no luck. Checked spam to make sure they were not being misdirected... spam folder is clean and empty. What gives?
kedreeva I am sorry. I did read about you getting the LG and putting the 2 halves together. Gosh I have so much going on I cant remember anything LOL. Also I am not getting any email notifications either. I tried all the things you did with no luck

Luckily I have been too busy to bother the eggs. I just finished a hatch of barred rocks for a customer I was busy with that. I won't candle until day 10 or so and then at lockdown. The eggs I have in there are hard to candle early so there is no point.

Aschen- I'd sit on your hands for you, but I am busy sitting on my own!!

It's really hard to stay out in the early days because you just want to know so badly what is going on inside those little shells. Did life start? Were they fertile? Did they quit? Is one of them becoming a danger to the others because it's gonna explode?

I can't start asking myself those questions because then I get nosy around the incubator!

DD- I'd leave it in and check in a couple days (2-3 days, if it's gone bad 4-5 may be too many). The jolt probably did worse for it than the crack, especially since you probably sealed it ASAP, so check to see if the air sac is intact in the large end of the egg and doesn't wiggle around.

Finally heard from the person sending my peafowl eggs... the birds have started laying again, so hopefully they get shipped within a week. Looks like you guys get company for long than you thought!

Thank you ... I will check it in a couple days

The power went out again last night at about one am. Luckily I was up (sick kids) and I was able to put a couple towels over the top right away. I think it was down for 45 minutes or so, and I couldn't sleep, so I was able to catch it and take off the towels when it flicked on again. I'm hoping the crummy power interruptions don't slow down the hatch. :(
