Setting eggs at different times with only 1 incubator

Hello! I am new here and have no clue how to post yet or where to post this. I have a broody hen that just hatched 6 chicks last week. She is now sitting on 7 new eggs, 1 that was from the last bunch but a little later than the rest...so today I took it inside to candle it and dropped it!!!! To my horror a baby chick was moving inside!! I put it in a plastic bag and heated it with a heating pad and wet paper towels trying to mimic an egg... Well it died of course. I'm posting a pick of the dead chick and I'm wondering if anyone can tell me how old the little guy was?

Hi :welcome

Glad you joined the flock. Sorry it's not under better circumstances. I would estimate your chick to be at least on day 18 possibly a day more. But definitely fully formed and very near hatch time. My top tip for candling would be to do it over a counter with a soft fluffy towel under the egg as you candle just in case eggs are dropped. It's not as far down and has less chance of breaking if it lands on the towel.

Thank u so much for your reply! I had chickens as a young girl but this is my first time round as an adult. So much to learn!
