Fisherman's Wife, We're new to this too. Just had a Cochin go broody and did the same as you. We got 8 fertile eggs and placed them under her. She has been sitting since 4/17 - they're due to hatch on Mother's Day. She is currently in the coop with the other chickens. Have you seperated your broodies from the rest of the flock yet?

Hi GreenEggerToo! Nice to "meet" you! I have not separated the girls from the others - I am nervous I will upset them, and my other 4 hens seem to be taking their lost laying boxes in stride. I was able to divide the extra large laying box one broody is in in half with a piece of cardboard, and now my other girls are laying in the open half. I read post after post about separating or leaving, and I think if everyone stays nice, I will leave them. I am so nervous about doing something wrong - but realize chickens have been doing this for hundreds of years... We call it our "maternity ward". Keep me updated!!! You should see fuzzy butts before I do!

OK team...any word from anyone? We are getting close right??? I keep checking the maternity ward, but those ladies are "locked down" with major glazed over stink eye. It is my first time ever hatching chicks, and my two broodies have been perfect! I so hope we are successful! If not...it is off to the feed store I go to find some babies!

just locked down.

love the glazed over stink eye, lol! i am a little worried that my humidity is too high (71ish), but have opened the ventholes and am hoping for the best.

Went to check on my girls, and heard a peep! Oh I am so excited I can hardly contain myself. I haven't seen the baby, but sure can hear it! We've seen it try to peek out a couple of times, and mom puts her back before we it can even poke a beak out! Back to the coop - nothing else will get done today that is for sure!!!
