Setting eggs Memorial Day Weekend! :) They're hatching!!!

Heh...last night I snuck into the incubator to candle and the first egg I pulled out was developing.

Week 1 is almost down. WOOHOO

I'm hoping that the dark is just development, and my $3 LED flashlight just isn't bright enough for me to see the actual veining. I might have to try that $20 one you've got

For $20 if it works on my eggs it'll be worth ending the wondering!

And woohooo Day 5 has reached it's end!

How is everyone doing? The temps are expected to climb into the mid 90's this weekend in CA so I am a little worried about frying my eggs. Please cooperate weather!

Thanks sequoiacyclist for the heads up

I'll join in, 11 due 17th June (four Silver Brahma, six Buff Orpington) and forty due 22nd (Barnevelder)

the first 11 are all candled (twice) and all developing, although one Brahma egg is coated over 50% with wax due to awful cracking and a dent. Being a Silver Brahma (breeder says silver laced.. ooooh!) it's way too precious not to do everything for. Am expecting to have to hand hatch this one, or at least scrape off wax when it pips. It's going to be a real nailbiter this one.

Sarah, Have you had any luck with the wax so far? What kind of wax did you use? I had a few eggs with cracks but decided to just toss them. My name is Sarah too by the way! WOOHOO!

Well the wax one has candle wax on it. I dripped it on after it had spent 24 hours in the bator already. I'll go take pics and post them up, both of the amount of wax and then the cracks, but you'll have to hang on 15 mins for them. It is developing at the same rate as the others and the air sac looks the same, so fingers crossed. It was set on last Tuesday so is into day 9.

Here's the massive amount of wax

and in the bottom right of the egg, shadow of baby kinin (we call them kinins, my 2 yr old can't say chicken)

Doing well here. Though we're starting to get warm too (92 today eek), and I just hope Chole stays as comfortable as she seems. She hasn't been panting or anything so I'm not concerned, yet.

Oh and for those of you with broodies ... broody poo is beyond disgusting. I had heard it was gross, but that really didn't prepare me. I had been looking all of the coop for poo. Boy oh boy, I didn't have to look for it today. It was huge! Thank goodness I think she had done it a few hours earlier, so most of the smell had dissipated.

But finding the poo also means that she's getting up on her own now. So unless I want to try candling again, I'm going to leave her be. Hopefully this will help me control the urge to candle again/often.

Bye bye day 6!

And how cool about the candle wax! I never would have thought of that. And those pictures are awesome.

for the baby kinin!

It's a very precious egg, and if it hatches, I might just have to name this one chick. Total experiment, I'd heard of putting wax on cracks, but never thought it would work on a literally semi-smashed egg. Haching will be a nightmare. Advice for that bit would be VERY welcome!!

Oh wow! That is quite a wax job. I've got my fingers crossed for the little kinin too! The development looks good though.

Airilith- Broody poos are gross aren't they? I can remember trying to avoid them as a child. YUK! Here is a toast to day 6 down. YEAH!
