I used a wooden cigar box (free from the cigar store in town), an extension cord and a light socket to make it. Lined the inside with aluminum foil for reflection. Total cost was around $4. The wooden piece in the second picture is an insert so I can candle smaller sized eggs. I watched a video on Youtube that showed me how to wire a lamp and I was good to go. I did use this type of bulb because it doesn't get as hot as a regular light bulb.

VERY COOL! I'm not 'creative' like that (although I wish I were!) hehe

It's roughly a week since some of you started your eggers - just wondering if anyone has candled yet and how that's going? I'm tempted to candle *today* since I read that you don't have to wait til day 5 (can see as early as day 3). ?

Chicky blessings to everyone and welcome to those who have just joined. =]

I'm candling a day early...I can't stand the wait any longer. The hubs just left to get batteries for my LED

[Update] I candled three eggs (store is right down the street) and then I felt like I was freezing them so I stopped at three.

2/3 are definitely forming, because they look like pictures of other well developing eggs being candled. The third egg I couldn't tell because it was extremely porous and apparently those are not ideal for hatching...lots of white dots. So all in all...good results (so far).

Day 7 today, first time we have ever candled eggs. After checking and re-checking...one of eighteen looked very speckled, and having looked at all the pics on the internet we could, we were afraid it may be due to bacterial contamination. We decided to pull that egg. Upon open inspection, it looks as if it was just the nature of that particular shell...the air sac (which we could not identify in any of the candled eggs) was present and appeared to be of appropriate size, and the embryo appeared to have been developing adequately...we feel sad and sorry to have stopped that one, but are grateful for the knowledge it gave us *sigh* The first two pics are of eggs that looked "normal" (as far as we could determine), the third pic is the one with the speckled appearance, the fourth pic is that egg after opening.
Continuing on with the remaining 17 eggs, and hoping all is well with everyone's clutches:)
