Setting Eggs Sept. 24th-Oct. 4th-Last Hatch of the Year. Anyone care to join me?

Hi!

Breed: OEGB (unknown what kind)
Location: Kansas
Set date: Sept. 24

I set 3 OEGB eggs under my broody girls on Sept. 24th. Last time I candled, they were all alive and growing, yay!
My broody girls are silkies and they are so determined! My buff/blue silkie Pumpkin is so cute. This is her third try on hatching and if she doesn't get chicks this time, my heart will be broken. My other silkie named Winter got a chick in the last hatch, but it died.

I am sooooo hoping for chicks.

Here's Pumpkin. She's all ready for Halloween, haha!

Wow, I got busy with work and didn't get online & this thread went crazy! Very active group.
I can't really candle most my eggs since they are Welsummer & Maran.
Also my blue eggs are hard to see anything inside.
I will try them again tonight. I wish I knew more about the weight method but it may be too late to start.
Glad to get to get back to reading all these posts.

Ya i am still amazed too cause i use to work at the post office as a distribution clerk and just wow!! You won't believe what kinds of stuff get shipped in the mail and what this stuff goes through to get to your mail box. Still miss hearing all the peeps from the baby chicks in the mail though. But not so much of a loud crowing roosters.

I don't think they put the 70 pound boxes on the belt but there sure are boxes larger than your eggs on the belts. (they don't put the chicks on the automated equipment that ever saw) I also used to work for the USPS, years ago I was in distribution before going to customer service.
LOL--I remember working in a small office the first time I got chicks. It was a Saturday before a holiday weekend and the carrier brought the box back because no one was home. He told me since Monday was a holiday they would probably die. YIKES. I was so upset. I stayed and called & called the people. I kept thinking, will I get fired if I take them home, you know they really do take opening & stealing the mail pretty seriously.
BUT I was saved - - - the nice carrier, who was off work, saw the man going home so he turned around and got those babies delivered.

I had both Marans and a single Wellsummer egg in my last hatch and I was able to see inside by using 2 light sources at once. Do one on the bottom and then one on top. I had a candler and a flashlight so I could do it myself. Otherwise you will need another person to help.
In order to use the weight method you would have had to weigh them before you set them in the bator. I did the weight method a couple of hatches ago and it really helped.

You guys will not believe it, but the eggs I sent made it from FL to WA in 2 days but the box was dented and broke or cracked 4 eggs!!!!!!! Aaaahhhhhhhhh!!! LakeBird is going to update fully when she's had some rest, but can you believe tt???!!!! After the conveyor belt discussion we were having

I got mine from Washington in 2 days also. Karen packaged them beautifully. She did label the box "Fragile Live Eggs!" and the box still looks brand new. I just candled them all and only one had a slight crack in it so I used some nail polish to seal it and will keep a close eye on it. All the others have beautiful aircells at the top. No floaties anywhere. They are officially in the bator as of 11:30pm.
