Setting Eggs Sept. 24th-Oct. 4th-Last Hatch of the Year. Anyone care to join me?

Interesting idea about the shape of the eggs. In humans, the males sperm determines the sex of the child. Would that be the same in chickens? And I thought he shape of the egg is determined by the hen as goes through her. Just talking out loud...your thoughts?

The hen determines the sex of the chick. As for the shape of the egg I think it is based on different things that are going on in the repro. tract of the hen.

That's why I hatch mine in a hatching tray (or egg cartons with bottoms cut off) - gives them a little more support - LOL

I do the same thing with the cartons. This time around I am using a plastic hatching tray to see if it makes any difference. Shipped eggs should be incubated upright anyway. Once my own chickens start laying eggs I will try laying them on their sides to see if it makes a difference.

Candled after 8 days and from the 24 placed into the incubator i have the following.
15 Have growing embryos
3 I am not to sure about at the moment.
6 Non fertilized

Still pretty good though for my second go at hatching :D

Nice numbers. What is your ratio of roosters/hen? That has a lot to do with the fertility of eggs.

Just read this interesting article and thought I would share. Apparently a hen only uses the left ovary for reproduction/eggs. If for some reason the left ovary is damaged or doesn't function any more the right ovary goes into over drive and produces testosterone and the hen can become a roo but not a functional roo. Don't believe me? Read this

What in the blazes of hockey sticks and dental work??? So weird!

(also posting to say that 5 of my chicks are moving around in the shell)

My first hatch I used 4 homegrown eggs stored at room temp and turned in the egg carton before setting and then I used 2 eggs from the refrigerator that were at least a week old and never turned before setting.

All 6 eggs were from one hen and roo that are alone.

All six developed and hatched into healthy chicks on time. All were incubated on their sides.
