Setting Eggs Sept. 24th-Oct. 4th-Last Hatch of the Year. Anyone care to join me?

Roxsanneinla - Don't give up yet.

I've had a broody get off the nest for two days thinking she had given up on the next, then she got back on and carried on with the motherly duties. She did have a small hatch but some did hatch out for her to my amazement!!!

I candled my 2 dozen again last night and have 8 clear and two with blood rings. I'm pretty bummed, but still keeping my fingers crossed with the rest. I think lockdown is the 15th for this batch right Brookhaven? I need to check my calendar.

If you set them on the night of the 9/26 then they would go into lockdown on Sunday night (the 14th) at the time you set them.

30 hatched total. 5 duds, 1 rotten 1 would have been a guinea. oops. so this set was 37 total from the very first setting.

Brook- one bator a sportsman ones an older 1202 other is a dickerson, and the hatcher was home built.
I have heard good things about the dickerson. If I really get into this I may just try building a bigger hatcher.

I was going to try ebay. Do you have any suggestions?
I would go to the buy, sell trade section here on BYC and see who has them for sale. I know there are several people that do. With Karen (Catdance Silkies) living in the same state as you I would contact her and see if she would send you some or maybe you too could meet up somewhere so they wouldn't have to travel by mail. You could also try Craigslist.

Hi, I'm a new chick here. I bought my children 21 chickens on May 5th. On October 5th, I got my first egg! Thus Monday, I had collected 4 eggs. I put them all in the incubator. This is my first time raising chickens. Should I expect any of these to hatch because of them being the first eggs? Yes, there's should be quite fertile. I think I ended up with about 10 maybe 11 roosters. This weekend, I'll be culling most of them out. Thanks!

I have heard that bacteria causes it also but my question about that is why does it seem to happen more to shipped eggs than local? I do know that the ring forms from all the blood vessels breaking down from the deceased embryo. So no, it doesn't hatch. When I candled Saturday night I placed all 6 of the bloodring eggs in an egg carton in the fridge so I could do the eggtopsies the next day when there was more light. When I went to take a picture of a bloodring last night they were all gone.
But for sure they wont hatch b/ c the embroy is dead huh? So thats what the blood ring is?

Because they were just going to pets, I didn't want to spend a whole lot of money. I found some on ebay that were $10 for a dozen or so eggs. Did you pay a lot for eggs from Catdance? I noticed here's were show birds and of course those seem to cost more...
