Setting Eggs Sept. 24th-Oct. 4th-Last Hatch of the Year. Anyone care to join me?

sorry to hear about so many losses.... i've been plagued recently with them. most all of my eggs are shipped, especially since the breeds i'm looking to get would cost about $100 (including shipping) if i ordered from a hatchery. if i only have a couple hatch outta these eggs, it'd pay for itself (in comparison to hatchery prices and shipping). it still doesnt make accepting losses any easier.

fingers crossed for marinecorpfarmr that he can replace the eggs that was destroyed .... if i had any extra eggs, i'd send you some marine. good luck finding some.

1 question tho: i have 1 chick in bator, 3 eggs in there... today is due date. how do i transfer the chick to a brooder without shrinkwrapping the rest?

How long has the chick been in there? They can stay in there without food and water for up to 3 days. If it is dry and fluffy then you can VERY QUICKLY open and take out. The humidity will drop some and if too much then add some warm water and get it back to where it should be.

here's some not so good pics...darn red light...

Precious little things; congratulations!!
I got a baby

5 more workin on it gonna be a long night Johnny Depp came through for me LOL
WOOHOO come on out chickybeans!

OK...I waited as long as I could (too late for one stalled pip), it had been over 24 hrs that any progress had been made by two of our pips...day 23...so I wrapped then in a warm damp paper towel, and extended the zip in the shell on the above pictured chick...the top of the shell came off fairly easily, so I put it back in the 'bator to let it unfold and climb out on his own. When he did, he had a big wad of poo stuck to him. I pulled him out of the 'bator tonight and cleaned it off, and I'm glad I did, as I saw that it was actually plugging his vent. He looks pretty pitiful, but still hangin' in there.
The other stalled pip was already dead. He hadn't completely absorbed the yolk.

Question: How long do you leave unpipped eggs it the 'bator before throwing in the towel and performing eggtopsy? My fear is that I would find I had interrupted them...

I agree with Texasmja...this can be tough, but not quite as tough as marewatch in early Feb.!!! ;)
Aww :) I'm glad it made it through!!
I am on day 19 1/2 and have an external pip already. It is on the egg that had a hole and I filled it with wax! I outlined the aircell at lock down and the pip is below it...

Nice sized pip there. :) I like the picture!
oh yeah i twitched n dropped one other night when i candled. it was a goner but had a very healthy (for 10 days) chick.
I'm sorry for your loss :( Doing that is my biggest nightmare now. I did it once when we got the eggs because I was drawing on them and the dog scared me and I stabbed the egg with the pencil. Now I'm scared of dropping them, too!
We are on Day 21 and I woke up to a pip!!! There may be another one that has pipped but the way it is sitting in the egg carton I can't tell if it is just part of the shell or a real pip.
YAY Pips!
I have two chicks bouncing around the incubator. They still look wet or at least not at all fluffy (it's been about 12 hours since hatch). The humidity is dropping and I have two eggs with pips. I really want to take these chicks out and add a sponge or something. I keep trying to add water with a straw but I can't seem to bump up the humidity.
Any suggestions?????
Ours dried up in about 2 hours and were ready for the brooder. Also - two of ours looked wet but they weren't - were just sticky and dry, not fluffed out yet. Rolling around in the brooder in a towel fixed that. Taking the chicks out really quick won't hurt the pipped ones as long as you're fast...we did it and the others hatched out just fine...just make sure you're fast as lightning about it.
Well I have some not so great news.... Having twin boys has come back to bite me in the butt yet again. Every single last egg that was in the bator, smashed or chilled dead. 10/3&10/10 sets both trashed
aww no!! :(( I'm sorry.
went to sleep with three eggs pipped and woke up to two cute chicks chirping.... now just waiting on the other 20
Congrats on the little peepers.
Update we have 4 bouncing babies 2 almost out and 4 more with peeps 4 nothing going on yet

Yay, bouncing chickies are the best.
Introducing Brookhaven's newest addition:

lol, that looks like our bator did. I looked in there to check on a pipped egg and I couldn't find the egg...flipped me out until I saw the chick huddled right where yours is.

6 hatched 4 that have pipped and 4 just sittin there nothing yet they better hurrry up they are going to get concusions from being rolled around rowdy little buggers
So coooot!!
here are some better pics of the gang...

They are darling!! I like the little calico looking chick. heh
Well I am done, that hatched is completed now that I did the eggtopsy's today.
I started with 18 eggs, 9 in an incubator and 9 under a hen.
I have 11 chicks, over 60% live.
3 were never fertile (all liquids, maybe very early quitters?)
2 died after pip as they didn't get out in time (happened to 4 but 2 were saved)
2 died earlier, never pipped and still had a large yoke

I am happy and I've given them all to my hen for now. She is very happy & fluffed up covering them all. I have to figure out later what I will do as it's too many for her to keep warm once they start growing. Some will have to go into a brooder. It seems like all my Welsummers are boys, by their markings, but I am going to try the feather test later today when it gets warmer.

the final eleven:

Just cleaned the cage yesterday, looks like it will be daily - - -
They are precious, although I am sorry for your losses on the others.
Ok I'm done to
14 local EE eggs never candled couldnt see in(LOL)

4-never pipped
8- did all by theirselves
1- pipped sat forever so peeled him out doing fine
1- pipped and died

So here are my 9 out of 14

Super cute! I totally want that kind of feeder but haven't been able to find one. The one we got is ...gahh, hate it. I ended up taking the container off the top and just filling the bottom.
I am sick

I just looked inside the bator window and saw my second SLW chick expelling the yoke she absorbed already :(

The homegrown chick has hatched and is doing great.
I'm so sorry about your SLW Mia =( But, I'm happy about your homegrown chicky.
Oh great more eggs to babysit...LOL!!!
YAY! eggsitting. :)

Our final results: 4 hatched and the others were eggtopsied by hubby and his sister. Their "innards" were on their outsides in 2 of them. 1 of them looks like it just couldn't figure out where the air sac was, and 1 of them they couldn't tell. (I never looked)

We have more due to hatch on the 22nd, 23rd and 27th.

WOW that's 2 from this hatch thread that have made it with the wax treatment. I guess it really does work. I had tried it once and the chick made it to lockdown but never hatched. So this time around I used the nail polish treatment and lost the chick around day 10 I think. Even if others say nail polish works I think the chemicals are too strong. I will be sticking with my beeswax from now on.

Can't wait to see pictures of the little ones.
The chicks out completely! The knock must have frightened it into hatching quickly, it's brothers and sisters are still sitting in their eggs lazy as can be xD

I actually saw about the nail polish method but I was worried about the chemicals too, and I was really worried it might make hatching even harder for the baby!
Hopefully the rest of our eggs hatch. I know there are two dead ones in there; one never developed and the other died around day 12, I think. Just slush and a split air bubble in there. The others are heavy as anything though!
