Setting eggs today 4/1/12 Anyone else?

Glad to hear most are developing Missy! Hope all continues well for your eggs!

I am not sure how long it takes an unfertilized egg to explode jodiea60. I have heard that they don't explode very often, but that it is possible every now and then. Hope someone can give you a better answer than I can.

My brother-in-law helped me candle my eggs tonight, since this is my first experience doing so. Turns out three of my Minorca eggs were fertile and developing, but they died, as the blood line (or blood ring, as I see it is called?) showed. One Minorca egg was fertile and still alive though, and my single production red egg was still too hard to see, since its a brown egg. He told me my incubator was probably too hot at 102, and suggested I lower the temp to 100, so I am going to try that. Probably going to put some more Minorca eggs in to see how a second batch goes this next week!

Sorry about your eggs :( When I looked up the blood rings, nothing I saw was like what I am seeing, I am going to take my chances and let them go longer.

Happy Easter everyone! I am fairly new to BYC and am very excited for my first attempt at hatching. I put mine in an 4/2. I put in 15 silkies and 10 from the hens I have now, welsummer, rhode island, and Ameraucana. I tried candling Friday and I think I only have 1 or 2 that are not fertile, pretty sure the rest are. I think I saw some veining in a few, so am waiting to candle again Monday to see the change. As I said, this is my first attempt so not really sure what I am looking at...lol

Unfertile eggs are safe in the incubator for quite a while unless they were contaminated with bacteria either before being placed in the incubator or very soon after. Usually eggs don't just explode without warning, most of them will "weep" or otherwise look bad before they turn into sulfur bombs. Many people don't even bother candling until day 10, especially with darker eggs, so that they don't accidentally toss good eggs thinking they were clear because they didn't see veins. If I'm ever not sure about an egg, I put it back in the incubator as apart from the other eggs as possible and check it again in 2-3 days. If it looks the same when I check again, then I toss it. Just Tuesday I candled a hatch that was on day 14 and saw two eggs that I thought had died. One I was absolutely certain of, but I still got a second opinion before cracking it open and checking. I was right, it had quit around day 8 or so. The other one I thought was dead, but wasn't certain enough to crack it. When I candled again 2 days later I saw that not only had the development continued to progress but there was visible movement now!

I put a 100 watt light bulb in one of those ceramic bases inside a shoebox and taped it closed. and cut a hole in the top. it works fairly well with the dark eggs but you have to wait a week or so before you can tell much in the candle. just remember that a regular incandelecent bulb puts out more light then a spot or floodlight.

I can not find any light that can candle my brown and green eggs so I will have to live through you guys on the candleing. lol - unless of couse I find something that will work.

do yourself a favor. if you expect an unfertile egg is in your incubator. ( any egg that is not not turning dark and looking like the rest after a week to put it simple ) get it out of your incubator.
I'm running a mixed hatch for other people at the moment. and I gambled on one persons eggs. not knowing the history of the eggs themselves, and let them go a " few more days ". well to make a long story short. I got violently sick yesterday ( Easter eve ) moving the other eggs to another incubator and cleaning up exploded bad eggs.

Well I still have 1, and maybe 2 good eggs going in my incubator right now, so that is a plus. I was planning on putting 3 new eggs in the bator tonight to replace the 3 I lost, but one of my hens decided to take a break today (sigh) so I think I will wait till tomorrow night and hopefully get a couple more eggs to put in.

Thanks for the information, tomorrow is the 7th day so when I candle them, if they are still clear, I will remove them.

Question----

How come some of my eggs look like 10 day old eggs? Could it be that one of my hens had already started sitting on them? Did they die? Different kind of chickens?

Of my 12 eggs (set 4-2-12) one I am pretty sure has a blood ring....How long do you leave them in the bator?? Cannot believe that at 9-10 days you can see movement!!!! I love the miracle of birth....I think I have a couple more that may be questionable but will wait alittle yet....These are bantams do they hatch earlier?? have heard that they do... If they do do ypu do lockdown earlier?
