setting eggs tonight!! anyone else?

Ohhh, Thanks Corg - I guess today was too early. I'm going to try to restrain myself from candling until Wednesday -which would be end of Day 5, beginning of Day 6 for these chickies.

Last night, somewhere b/n 1:30 and 3 the temp dropped to 97 in the incubator. And I think it's because we lower our heat at night, but I didn't realize it would have an impact 'inside' the bator. I read a thread that it would, though. Tonight I'll either keep the house heater consistent or put a little heater in the 'egg nursery' to kick on as the house cools down. I'll let ya'll know how it goes.
You should see something wed for sure! It takes longer for the internal temp of the eggs to change so dont worry to much. I try to use the plugs to adjust the temp in mine. We have had crazy weather here. One day its feels like winter the next day feels like spring and it does affect the incubator. Mine sits on the kitchen counter beside the fridge. I like it there because the fridge gives off some heat. Plus I have a towel under it for when I miss the water trays and water runs out the bottom holes.

Well out of 31 eggs I only have 15 left in the incubator. The clear eggs had bothered me long enough so I took them all out this morning and went into the closet to candle them one last time. I cracked every one of them open. Some looked fine just no development others looked scrambled and half rotten. Plus I had the 5 blood rings.

I'm sorry you didn't have better luck on the eggs, so far - I've read that's typical with shipped eggs. Hopefully the 15 will continue to develop and hatch.

............X15! What do you think the problem was? -Infertile? -Damage to air cell? -Rough shippment? - ?

I want to candle SO bad, but it would probably be a waste of my time at this stage. By next weekend, I might be going through the same thing as you. My 16 eggs are all shipped: coast to coast! They appear fine but I just don't see how a chick can fit inside these tiny eggs. Some are smaller than the pullet eggs my chickens just started laying.

Good news -My friend is bringing me her incubator tonight. I might plug it in and see if I can get a more even temp with hers and transfer the eggs during one of the turnings. Plus, I really want to watch the chicks hatch through a desent size window.

. I do not know what the issues is/was. I can not think of anything thats went wrong since I started them. Temp has been good. I let them set for 12 hours to come up to room temp before they went in. Clean hands when handled. I just dont know

I said the same thing about the bantam eggs. I only have a few tiny ones left so I hope they hatch. I want to see how tiny they are when born.

What a good friend. Do you know what brand it is? I hope you get to transfer them!

Corg-I do not know what brand it is. She wasn't sure herself. She inherited it from the school where she teaches, but has never used it to actually hatch chicks. Once she fired it up for a week and it held a very steady temperature. I'll be greatful for that (and my husband too.) At night I set the alarm clock every 2 hours to make sure the temp hasn't plummeted or spiked. But it takes me half an hour to fall back asleep, so I usually check again before falling asleep. Just an example: at 12, 12:30, 2, 2:30, 4, 4:30, 6, 6:30, etc... This is why I say, "I don't know if I could do this again!"

I had an idea to make some money (if incubating was easy). I would hatch out a bunch of white or light chicks and dye their fluffy feathers different colors (sugar free koolaid). And then sell them around Easter on CL-Just a thought. (They lose their baby feathers in a few weeks anyway). This isn't original with me and I don't know if I would really do it, but here's a picture:

I have 4 white showgirl eggs and a silkie egg in the bator , Im on day one.... its been a few years since i fired up the little giant could someone remind me is it day 18? that i turn the egg turner off?
thanks

Yes, on Day 18: remove egg turner (or stop turning) & increase humidity (most people suggest 60-65% humidity from Day 18).

Post pics of the new bator when you get it set up but in the mean time get some rest!!!!!!!! Hens get off the nest and worst case the eggs will hatch a day late if temps are low. There is a new incubator out that has a cooling feature built in hat will cool the eggs. I'll have to see if I can find the thread. The colored chicks are done by put a dye into the eggs during incubation from what I have read. I think you would be better off just selling chicks as day olds.

(I have buff orpingtons, lt. brahma, ISA Brown, leghorn, cornish cross, and black astrolorp hens. Several barred rock, and Americauna hens. I also have a Barred Rock,Isa brown and Americauna rooster to match. All of these are in the same pen for the winter, so you may get full blooded or cross bred eggs. I cannot guarentee what breed the chicks will be.
My americauna hens (easter eggers) have beards and muffs, green legs, but also have a tail. My roo is purebred Americauna He is a blue.

I'm sorry to hear about your eggs, Corg. I hope all 15 hatch and become healthy, happy chickens, that lay you 3 eggs a day and never spill their feed or poop in their water! :)

Cali, you need to rest! Don't let this experience ruin you on hatching. You are one dedicated chick mama and I commend you!

The coop is going great! We have a roof now! Pics tomorrow. I didn't get to take many today.

I had to toss an egg with a blood ring today, but so far the rest seem to be developing. Wednesday is lock down for three of them!!
