"Settling" Shipped Eggs: Necessary? With Auto-Turner?

Curranchickens-

I am so sorry about your eggs! How discouraging! I sure hope you get at least the one!!

How far were your eggs shipped from to you?

I am just going to set mine tonight and forget 'em. I would actually wait another 24 hours to set but they are already like a week old from having them gathered and then shipped (or should I say THROWN to NY!)

I did candle and all but 2 air cells are wobbly....the other 2 are BUBBLES

They came from TX to VA... But they got held up at the PO over the weekend. I saw pics of your eggs and they were packed a whole lot better! I agree with everyone else that your eggs are a result of poor packaging. I know that no one on here wants to bad-mouth the people who they buy eggs from but really... If she were shipping fine china would she simply throw it in a box with a couple layers of newspaper around it? I don't think so. My eggs were individually rolled in bubble wrap several times over and then rolled in newspaper. Then each egg was rolled in grocery store bags till all the space in the box was packed tight. As bad as the box looked (due to the PO), not a single egg was broken. I had one with a crack but that crack could only be seen when candled. I feel confident that with how hard the PO was with my eggs, they should have all been broken. The packing at least gave them some sort of a chance. As far as your one egg... We are in the same boat. I paid 45 dollars for the one salmon faverolle egg I have left. I am hoping it at least hatches. As far as my other incubator with my own eggs in it, I have 8 left. I had 15 that were moving but then within a few days, 7 of them died. I now have 8 left. I think my room temp took a dive. It has been warm here in VA lately... Kids are all in shorts already. So I had my hear off. Temps dipped so low in the middle of the night, I had to scrap ice off my windshield to get the kids to the bus stop! It was freezing on the house. That night I candled and saw that 7 died. The remaining 8 go into lockdown tomorrow though... Crossing my fingers... My first lockdown!

I agree with dirt creature and curran chickens in regard to the newspaper packing.. I have ordered eggs many times and I have never received them packed in newspaper in an egg carton??? It's been my experience that they have individual bubble wrap on them, then they have added bagged air, sometimes the foam. (which I particulary like because I use them to put my eggs in when I go to candle). I have never had a cracked egg. now that being said, my showgirls are a mess and I am not holding out much hope for them. Air sacks running down the sides etc. And they were packed perfectly in my opinion. I put them in lockdown today..it will be a miracle if even one hatches!

Shipped eggs are just a gamble........for me, it is worth it because There are particular breeds etc that I really want and there aren't many people that breed them. I set 16 frizzled naked neck green eggers on the 24th. So far so good. Again packed excellent. You just never know....It's so frustrating....:(. I am so sorry that your eggs arrived broken.. in the future i would kindly ask the breeder if they would bubble wrap them and add packing material to the box....again just my opinion....everybody has their own system of doing things...

After reading this thread I will definitely let the eggs sit for 2 to 3 days before I incubate....but I am still unsure about the auto egg turner. In the past I have turned them by hand and left them lying on their sides....rarely lost a chick....

I think from now on I will ask HOW they pack eggs.

so ive been lurking on this thread since it started and have followed somguidelines on hatching shipped eggs posted here.....i received 18 eggs monday 4-2 shipped from ohio to wv, neighboring states, i was locating a closer source of blrw. i allowed them to settle for 24 hours at room temps and candled when i placed them n the bator. removed one that had cracked diring shipping. all 17 eggs are at 99.7 degres and 34 percent humidity on an auto turner straight up not plugged in. a few had detached air sacs, and im planning on plugging in the turner at the 5 day mark. seems like a happy medium lol. i will def give u guys updates along the way! wish me luck lol. and thanks for all the great ideas!

good luck and enjoy the hatch..you will be suprised at how well the air cells heal.. check one or 1 befor you put turner on ..if they look real stable....go for it..do keep us posted..7 days works great for me , have cicks all over..so happy about it..some of the eggs wont make it through just because of the shipping damage...but when you see those nice growing air cells and babies on day 14...you will be so glad you did...

Great! Mine are BLRW's too.We can hatch together!

those were your shipped eggs?... they could have been bubble wrapped . wow that didnt look hopeful...the more you can get them to settle , the better, whats eft of them that is.

I also have BLRW in the bator right now, they are shipped. Due the 12th and the 19th. two batches.

The first, i let sit 24 hours and put in withou the turner on for 4 days then started it.

The second batch of shippe eggs i let sit for 24 hours, and put right in the turner on with the rest.

All of mine are developing just fine, infact Im pretty sure the ones that went straight to turning, are better off!

if they came from your own barn , then you sure dont need to let those rest' throw those right in, if your really lucky and air cell damage is almost none, let them sit a day or 2...if your air cells are sloppy..you will be sorry if you start them in the turner too early they will never heal a few will make an attempt and they will be in strange shapes and chicks will need to be helped to hatched.. i found that out the hard way once, got jumpy and turned it on early and 1 egg out of 2 doz hatched
we
actually posted a paper by a vet.. also a paper from a master hatcher who uses the redwood incubators..that says almost the exact same thing at least 2 times in here , once in easter hatchalong and maybe this thread? it was pretty much how to hatch the unhatchable...the air cells that do not heal in the first 7 days..those embryos will quit later in term..both re great articles worth a read..the person who uses redwood bators explains it very clearly..he says a hen never sits eggs upright or rests them throughout hatch...the only time he does this is when he gets shipped eggs in...if the embryo does not get a solid start in a somewhat shattered environment, by moving it, it will give super low hatch rates as they will quit..the air cell remains detached, and never settle .

sometimes there can be a problem on the breeders end, like wrong nutrition ect...its a real science for sure..
