"And almost all heating pads and electric blankets contain wires coated in PTFE."

Interesting quote from http://www.mickaboo.org/newsletter/oct10/Teflon.html
Thanks for that link. I know the pots and pans I bought after the fire specifically said ptfe free- I didn't even realize at the time it would be dangerous to birds as well. I just felt like cooking food in it couldn't be good. Our daughter has epilepsy, thankfully mild, but I try to be cautious about what we put in her body as well.

At least those wires are inside the fabric cover. Sure makes one nervous about all the other uses.

"Self-cleaning ovens are often coated with PTFE to allow food ash to slough off during cleaning."
So maybe the smell of a self-cleaning oven being cleaned isn't JUST burning the food residue to a crisp?

I gave up on non-stick pans some time ago. Not related to the possible dangers of the coating (because I didn't know about it) but because when the coating starts to wear off, they change from non-stick to "sticks worse than non non-stick". Then you throw the pan away and buy another. Not environmentally nor wallet friendly. As mentioned by others, cast iron properly seasoned is pretty darned good. And the pan is heavier than the handle so they sit flat on the cooking surface unlike many other pans.

Cast iron is great. I use it.

Just read this entire thread and I am in tears about how such an innocent mistake can hurt us.

Just wanted to say to @AaronandAlice I am really sorry for you loss. But because of this I am seeing a ton of people learning from this. You may have saved 100s/1000s or more chickens due to this. Your girls will live on in all of us that learned from this incident and as we pass the word on hopefully this will never happened again.

Also wanted to just say great job to this awesome BYC community. You guys are the best!
