Seven dead hens within 4 hours, not attacked. UPDATE: Teflon Poisoning!

Just one more thing on the list that's toxic in our environment.
I was going to give my chickens some sod from Home Depot this week and in watering it found out it was painted with something green, whether it was paint or fertilizer, it was sure not non toxic.
Chickens are like the canary in the coal mine.
We wish we are all there so we could help you.

Oh my goodness! How devastating! :hit I'm grateful for the amazing group of people on this site... I never would have known that about Teflon coated bulbs either! Glad it was figured out before you lost your entire flock! Give your husband a hug from all of us. He shouldn't blame himself. He was just trying to make them more comfortable. Accidents happen, and now we all know for next time. This was such an unfortunate tragedy for you guys, but thank you for seeking help on this site, a lot of us learned something from this!:hugs

Thanks, I have a parrot and threw out every piece of Teflon I had when I learned this. I don't think humans should use it at all frankly. This is NOT the common knowledge it should be. Bad stuff.

I hope the others air out well.

I actually was thinking shatter resistant would be better so they couldn't accidentally eat bits of glass if it did break and fall. I just feel so sad because they were great chickens and I hope they just passed in their sleep and didn't suffer. :(
I'm sure they did

Agreed, thank you. I even mentioned the bulb to my husband because I just put it in and turned it on before I went to get my daughter at 2:30. He (and I both) thought- how could a light bulb be the problem? I mean, I'm glad it's not a disease or infection I missed- but it still really breaks my heart. :(
