Seven dead hens within 4 hours, not attacked. UPDATE: Teflon Poisoning!

This is such a sad thing but being able to get the info available here at BYC where so many come to learn would be slightly comforting maybe.
We never would've known otherwise. I've always come to read the forums when I have questions, but am so grateful that so many here are so knowledgeable and active in the group! Thank you all. It's still a terrible situation, but there is comfort in knowing what it was and that we won't ever make this mistake again. <3

Please don't beat yourself up about this.
Also, you did a great job keeping engaged in your post and saved four of your birds. Your engagement is why so many people posted.
Cause there's lots of posters that post an emergency and then walk away for two days.
Anything can happen at any time to chickens. The accidents that can happen would fill 1000 posts.
Accidents...most things that happen to chickens are not intentional.

Thanks, I have a parrot and threw out every piece of Teflon I had when I learned this. I don't think humans should use it at all frankly. This is NOT the common knowledge it should be. Bad stuff.

I hope the others air out well.

And watch out for the latest craze...all these new copper based/coated skillets and Pots & Pans by everybody and their brother out there. They are all not created equal.

What I find interesting is that some are dishwasher safe, while others are hand-wash only. And I've noticed that a few of my skillets have scratched just like Teflon products. Then again it could have been my bad because some of them say don't use metal utensils, while the rest say they will stand up to any abuse(?). I wouldn't want to prepare an occasional treat for my spoiled brats in something that could possibly chip.

Thank goodness I still have a few stainless steel skillets and a gazillion cast iron skillets and pots.

Yes, the good news for most is that it's a commercial product so wouldn't be sold in a regular store. What makes me feel exceedingly stupid is that there was a warning on the box that I never even looked at.
So sorry, it could have happened to any one! I ran out and had a look at the package my new bulbs came in, just in case!

I am so glad you have that packaging. Anything labeled Commercial raises a red flag for me, and I go into that nosy/research mode to see what sets it apart from what's available to the general public, that's if I'm shopping for a future purchase.

But when you need a quick fix, you just grab what's on hand, which I have done many times, without reading what's on the label and for the most part, the package was thrown away long ago, with the item just sitting on the shelf.

Some items look the same visually, but very deceptive. So sorry for the loss of your beloved chickens and your house. I pray that you recuperate and move on to a happy, healthy and prosperous New Year.

This board is absolutely wonderful, and it's no surprise that so many people will come to your rescue. It may take a bit of digging, but they eventually find a solution to any problem presented here.

I hang out in the AZ thread, but occasionally, other parts of the country catch my eye.

Wishing you the best for 2018. --BB
