Just to clarify further: the use of Sevin dust is NOT being outlawed entirely by the EPA. The uses it is presently allowed for are being reduced. All products with the ative ingredient in Sevin as they are presently labelled for use are being phased out. You will still be able to get Sevin and products with it's active ingredient after the date mentioned just with it uses restricted as will be stated on the packaging. The old packaging with expanded uses is being outlawed and eliminated. Sorry to get under your craw just stating facts and trying not to mislead. Keystonepaul

A hundred years ago, when I was quite a bit younger than I am now, our apartment became infested with fleas. It was a nightmare. there were fleas flitting through the carpets, leaping on my young son, hopping on my indoor only cat, eating my husband alive!! (Our apartment was one of those ground level affairs, where the windows were literally at ground level. Fleas had paraded in through the screens before I knew what they were about.)

We tried everything -- sprays, bombs, insecticides -- nothing worked, until I tried sevin. I dusted the carpet. I dusted the cat. I dusted the laundry. The cat I put in the tiled bathroom. The whole family went out for an afternoon. I left the vacuum at the door. Upon our return I vacuumed our way in. We never saw another flea and I have sworn by sevin ever since.

The cat lived to be a healthy sturdy 18. I now use sevin on my dogs at flea season (now).

We just spread sevin all over my son's (grandson's) new yard to kill all the chiggers that were eating us alive.

If I would use it on my dear cat, my princess dog, my family's carpet and my grandson's play yard, I would say it is certainly safe for your chickens. Like everyone has said, use it sparingly. The bag of sevin I have now is more than half full and I've had it eight years.

And here's another point -- all of these chemicals are to some degree dangerous -- but I'd prefer to use sparingly one that works as opposed to frequently use one that doesn't work quite so well.

Sevin isn't being pulled from the shelves. It's USES are being changed, but the product, in both powder and liquid will still be available. Incidentally, our local feed guy said the price is sky rocketing for Sevin in the new packaging.

Reading the entire EPA notice, you'll notice about halfway through that only the product direction uses has been changed. Poultry has NOT been eliminated from Sevin. Mostly peas, and other succulent plants, sweet potato dipping before planting, etc. Very straightforth, and educational. Thanks for posting the link!

I just dusted all of mine with Poultry Dust, because I thought they were just pulling out their juvenile feathers and I picked one up, and I saw this tiny little white bug. I am assuming it is lice?

So, I also dusted the coops and the run. And also added DE. My can states that if you get it on your skin to wash for 15-20 minutes. So, I am assuming it can cause some kind of harm.

But, I would rather be mite and lice free and just make sure I wash extremely well after using it.

Scalded myself in the shower!

Chic.. I found parasites on my chicks as well and Totally freaked out. And because I am a worrier by nature, I pondered about the whole sevin controversy quite a bit. I was so afraid that my chicks would grow extra feet or something but... I finally "just got over it" and sprinkled the sevin on them. It was so not a big deal as I made it out to be. The nasty little parasites were gone the very next day... now that's peace of mind! The fact is that many people use it still. Just be responsible with it and wear a mask and gloves and all, but I promise you, your chicks will be soooo much happier without parasites. Happy chicks, Happy mom! Right? Good luck

The dusting will be a good prevention however.

On the dust, I always assume it can and try to limit direct skin contact although oddly we're supposed to dust our birds with it.

But permethrin is used as a wound spray for screw worms for animals, so I always take those labels with a grain of salt and just try to do as they say.

I haven't personally had any adverse effects from using Sevin Dust on any of my pets.... I agree with threehorses... Use your own judgement... if it is all about the environment then by all means sit down on the ground with a pair of tweezers and pick them off one by one. I still have bees in my yard and even flies occasionally but the mites..... they don't stick around... I also condone the use of DE as a support measure..... and there were honeybees just today gracing my yard.... I really don't want to hurt the either

Here is a Hijack opp: Safeway has their returned bottle and can area set up in such a way that it traps honeybees....shouldn't they be accountable for their "bee traps"?
