Sevendust?

The white bug - was it long, almond shaped, or like a dot? It could be. Sometimes they just get bugs in their feathers from the grass, etc, too.

The dusting will be a good prevention however.

On the dust, I always assume it can and try to limit direct skin contact although oddly we're supposed to dust our birds with it.

But permethrin is used as a wound spray for screw worms for animals, so I always take those labels with a grain of salt and just try to do as they say.

They are like little white dots. They are so small they are hard to see. At first I thought it was mites, but after reading that they are red, I thought lice. But, they didn't look like lice either, so I thought that maybe they were just hatched.

Maybe next time I won't look like a lobster coming out of the shower

I'm such a goof. I'll start taking it with a grain of salt, and maybe I won't be so paranoid about it. I will still be careful, but not so uptight.

threehorses your so smart, that is why I always love getting help from you. Maybe my knowledge will be where yours is, one day.

I used Sevin dust just this week, was supposed to be safe said the farmer's co-op. ThreeHorses was right, she suggested not to use it but my hubby bought it before I could stop him. So I used it. My two Aruacana's are dead now. I lost one yesterday, dusted on Sunday.

I use Seven DUST 5% dust and my flock is doing great. When I went to the feed store they were out of Poultry Dust, so I did some research here on the forum and lots of folks said they used it. Walmart has it.

HollyTree, Did you use the 5%?

I will have to retract what I said about Sevin. I used a product from ACE hardware, which is permethrin and is supposed to be ideal for dusting chickens. Even says so on the back.
Sorry, I've tried entering a product pic, but can't get it to load.
I mentioned I suspected coryza and I think between the dusting & illness, it killed my Aruacana's.
Anyway, I don't want to mislead anyone about Sevin dust.
It's so hard being a Newbie!!!

I was so worried before I used it for the same reasons. I was so suprised when I took the time to read the different lables on the different types. the only place I found the 5% was at Walmart, I think they had 3 different ones.

I've only had my 8 chickens for about a month now. A few of them came with something stuck to the middle of some the feathers under their neck. This is really bugging me ;-) because I don't know what it is or if I need to do something about it. If I had to describe it, maybe like a piece of oatmeal or white rice, just smaller, hard also. When I try to pull it off, the feather will come out because it is stuck hard on the feather.

Any ideas??

Thanks,
Sandy

The little white ones are mites, too. There different types. (OK this is making me very itchy!) If they're dots, they're mites - and if they're in the box, they're definitely something that lays off the bird. Lice are more like the smaller case "L" - or slightly almond shaped, wheat colored, or grey with a red abdomen (sucking lice) and rarely come off the bird ever.

LOL on the lobster look -

Hey that's not goofy, that's smart!

And thank you for your kind words. What's the use of going through a bunch of stuff and learning if you can't share with your chicken buddies? As I like to say: Lemonade from lemons!

I accidentely found out my birds had lice. I tried catching an escaped peahen and found them crawling all over the hanfull of feathers I ended up with. I let them all loose and saw them dusting themselves in the ash pile where I recently burned brush almost every day. I locked them all back up this week to dust them with permethrin and when I went out I could not find a single louse anywhere on the birds I checked. Do you think the ashes killed the lice or somehow forced them off?? I am going to hold off on dusting unless I find more lice now.

It was mites then! I swear I could feel them crawling all over me, they weren't but my imagination took over.

I just don't do bugs! My kids hate me, because I always have the electronic bug zapper handy. They really hate me when they get doused with the Coconut Oil for precautions.

In case anyone is wondering, it is said that Coconut Oil breaks down the exoskeleton of human lice. You leave it in for about 2 hours with a shower cap on. You do have to use Dawn to get it out. And for all you women that have dry skin, a little drop of Grape Seed Oil mixed with your moisturizer is great.

Your welcome. Your a very kind person, and I enjoy learning from you. I'm so glad your my chicken buddy!
