Severe bumblefoot surgery **GRAPHIC**

I treated my Huevos for her bumble. We've had her for a week, having gotten her from another family who was moving and could not keep them. I noticed her limp, looked at her foot, goggled what I saw and learned about bumblefoot.

I used a scalpel from TSC. Her scab and plug seemed to be stuck together - I could find little else in the rather large hole. This was a very large bumble. I packed it with triple antibiotic and wrapped it up. I will most likely not be able to stop myself from looking at it in the evening and will rinse and reapply ointment then.

She had a much smaller bumble on the side of her foot - that one popped right out, corn shaped and all, just as described.

She kicked a lot while I was working on her and the big bumble bled. My concern is about letting her back out; it's wet and rainy here and I don't want her to get that foot wet, so I guess she'll be in a dog carrier for a little while until I feel more comfortable about her and the bandage.

Don't let her back out with her foot bandaged and it's wet. It just makes it worse. She really should just stay in a kennel in the house. I know it sucks, but it's better for her. Sounds like you did a great job!

How is he doing now? I'm book marking this page so I can find it if I ever need too. (Hope I don't, but its good to be prepared)

He seems to be getting better ever day. It's a slow healing process since I'm trying to get everything out the top since that is where the holes ended up being. He's loose in my basement and he stays pretty much on the area that I put old towels down and where his food and water is. Works out pretty well - so far! This way he can walk around and flap his wings and get more exercise than staying in a cage.

I noticed this morning that he is putting more weight on it. Before it has been kinda of half hearted putting weight on it. I know this thing has to hurt him. I was very glad to see him put quite a few solid steps on that foot without falling over.

I'm looking into getting him some chicken diapers. I swore I would never have a house chicken, but I imagine that I am looking at at least another month before he can go back outside. The more mobile he gets, the worse the pooh will be! After I soak his foot (he will now lay down in the tub so his feathers get soaked!), and after I treat his foot, I leave him in the kitchen until he dries. I don't want to take him back to the basement when he is still wet. Well the other night, I forgot to take him back! I had a lot of pooh to clean up.Ugg.

Many years ago I used a chicken diaper on the only survivor of a school egg-incubating project. We were really hoping Chickie was a hen but he turned out to be a grouchy rooster. S/he was going to be my classroom pet but was too aggressive.

I ordered one online from someone who custom made them, then copied the design and made a bigger one when he got bigger.

Huevos update: I did return her to the coop; the wrap worked great and her foot was clean and dry this morning. Nothing looks red or feels hot, so I'm hoping that's a sign that things are healing.

He's doing great! He started crowing a few days ago for the first time in 6 weeks!!

It will be Friday before I soak him again and treat him. I'll take some pictures then!

Thanks for asking!
