Severe mating injury

My hen was injured by my roo when mating. She's his favorite, was already missing a bunch of her saddle feathers. The slice is large and muscle exposed. I flushed the wound with antiseptic wash. What I want to know is if this can heal or I should euthanize her. Rooster is getting his spurs removed as soon as I catch the lil brat. I've also ordered some saddle vests to see if that helps.

It may heal, but stitches would be best. I would be rid of that rooster. I've never seen wounds that severe.

You are gonna need to keep the hen somewhere flies can't get at her. Others will be along with better wound care tips. It's up to you if you wish to cull or mess with her and see how it does. I've seen some pretty nasty stuff heal up on poultry.

Generally it's the toe nails doing the damage. Definitely separate him out and let your hens have some peace.

I'm no expert but I've heard to just flush the wound to clean it with some diluted betadine and you can put on some Neosporin. Ill do some more research now.

Ok, on top of what I said before, keep her away from flies and you can put non stick pads on the wound, wrap it in gauze and then wrap that in vet wrap if it's possible to do that in the injured area. Change that out every day. How is she eating and drinking? I'm sure someone knows more than me on this but best of luck

Flush the wound, pack it with neosporin, & then spray with blue kote.

Trim away some of those feathers around the wound and maybe take her into a warm quiet room in your house and give her some electrolytes in her water if she is not acting her usual self.

I had it wrapped but it didn't stay very long. I think she actually tore her skin more with the bandage fiasco, so I left it off for the time being. She's isolated from the flock and in a cage in my covered porch. She's eating just fine, acting normal. But I cringe every time I see that mess on her.

rooster is very sweet and normally gentle so I'm not going to get rid of him just yet. But he's getting a day at the nail salon to blunt his daggers.

Where is that injury? Usually they get injured on their backs or under their wings but that looks like it might be below her vent in which case I would not be blaming the rooster.
If it is below her vent, my guess would be that she has salpingitis, as she appears to be very swollen, but it really depends what part of the chicken we are looking at??
If she has salpingitis, I would euthanize. If it genuinely is a mating injury to her back or flank, there is a good chance she will recover. Give it a good clean up by irrigating it thoroughly with diluted betadine or chlorohexidine and then keep it moist with triple antibiotic ointment or honey and as others have said, keep indoors out of the flies and cage the "rooster" (my guess is that he is probably a youngster) so he can't injure any others.

Covered porch is nice, but indoors would be better unless you don’t mind dealing with flystrike.
Now about this “rooster”, is he more or less than a year old?
If less than a year old then he is a cockerel and should be separated from the pullets and hens until he matures. You may have to add some pullets/hens to your flock if he is very needy.

I flushed out the wound again and smeared lots of Neosporin. I covered her cage with a white sheet to keep the flies out. The injury is under her wing. Rooster is a little over year old. again, Normally very gentle with his girls. This one seems to be the exception.
