Severe prolapsed vent with vent gleet! Need help! (graphic photos)

Chitownhens - just wanted to give you an update on Ms. Peeps... she is doing much better today and I appreciate your helpful advice!

I ended up having give her a significant debridement at 2am to keep things from closing up and preventing her from pooping. The scabby thing at the end of her cloaca made it nearly swell shut! After that (and a good long warm bath), we did a blow dry and preparation H and I held things in there for a good 20 minutes until she fell asleep. She miraculously kept it in all night and this morning I got up to find that she had done a lot of pooping on her own (yay!) and didn't have nearly as much of the gross yeasty the stuff coming out. Barely any at all, actually.

The other thing I did for her was sprinkle heavy duty probiotic capsules on small amounts of yogurt throughout the day, mixed with a little oatmeal. I also gave her some aspirin water before wrapping her in a towel to cut off the dead stuff ;-)

She has really perked up today and I gave her a little free range time with her friends. Barely any discharge out the back end and have not seen the prolapse at all since last night. No eggs yet, but I'm ok with that (given that she's mostly been in the dark for the last 3 days). She deserves a rest! I'm amazed at these birds sometimes...

Very good to hear. After our EE was able to keep everything inside it took at least 4-5 days before she was getting back to normal. Sounds like it's going well for you and that is very good news. Thanks for the update.

Hi Flossiesflock! How is Ms Peeps doing? Did she recover fully? I am curious if you pushed the scab in with the other tissue or if it fell off? This sounds like exactly what is going on with my Millie. Yesterday I noticed the prolapse so I pulled her out, bathed her with epsom salt, and actually started her on antibiotics along with topical vetricyn and ph. I started the antibiotics because the tissue was raw and bleeding so I was worried about an infection. Today there is the smell and discharge that got me looking up vent gleet. She seems constipated and her poop is really small and hard with yellow discharge. The prolapse seems better except for this big brown hard piece of skin that sounds like the scab you describe. I am thinking maybe the ph and bath was able to reduce enough swelling that now the discharge from the gleet is coming out. I am now doing probiotics as well (I'm reading that the antibiotics may make it worse so will switch that out for ACV garlic water with vitamins). I know it takes time for this to heal so I don't expect her to recover after a day but am worried about the scab. Was that something that was difficult to heal?

You may want to include a picture of the vent in the new thread, since it may only be a prolapse that has damaged the vent, and not vent gleet.

Henley Reeves, one of my Delaware hens, has a severe prolapsed vent that I'm guessing comes with vent gleet (due to the stink), and I'm not sure what to do next. We've soaked it in epsom salt and applied antibiotic cream (without pain killer). However, when we tried to push the vent back in, Henley kept trying to push it out with an expression of constipation. Therefore, we have been unable to push the vent back in, which I know is the most important part. She's currently been placed in the garage (dark, of course) with a dish of water. I'm going to try and keep the room dark for most of the day in order to prevent her egg-laying. Does anyone have any advice on how I can keep the vent in? We already had a hen die recently due to unsuccessful doctoring

so I am really scared to take any risks.

There is also, as you can see, a hard yellow coating around the vent. I saw on another thread that this will soften in a few dies with application of the cream. We have also trimmed the feathers around the vent.

What do I do now? The vent won't stay in, and I'm out of ideas.

Ouch! Poor girl but I have heard that honey works good for this ! You could maybe put some on the tip of your finger next time you try to push her vent back in or put some around her vent
