Hello everyone, my wife went to check on the birds this morning. Noticed one of my 3 week old ducklings had this massive wound on her thigh.

She's currently cleaning it in saltwater, and I'll be separating her and keeping her warm with food and water (should I put nutri drench?)

I plan on getting blue coat on the way home.

What else should I do? It seems I should sew this shut, but I've never done that. Please help ASAP!

She's in good spirits it seems. Not too bothered by it, but man, it looks horrendous.

Any idea what happened? Clip feathers away so you can treat and when it begins to close no feathers get stuck inside and cause infection. Use an antibiotic ointment without pain instead of blue kote you want the wound to stay moist and blue kote tends to dry. It’s okay for superficial wounds though. Keep her away from flies so maggots don’t become a problem. And yes nutridrench is fine to use.

Thank you! That should be enough for a wound that deep? Should I wrap/cover it or anything? I know that seems difficult to do, but not sure if necessary

@anangrygoose how is your duck doing today?
Thank you so much for asking.

She is doing very well. Seems to be healing well. I put her back with the flock yesterday while they were all out. She seemed very happy to be playing around them again.

I'll continue treating the wound until it's completely healed, but it's going well luckily. Much better than expected. Thank you

that’s wonderful news! it’s very encouraging to know how well a duck can heal.
