We have a hen that got pecked on over night. She has a pretty severe head wound that is to the bone with exposed tendon. I have cleaned it with Vetricyn Poultry and applied Silver Honey ointment. She is isolated in our home for the next couple days so I can monitor closely. Then we will keep her in a crate with the flock to reintegrate. She’s is acting perky, has drank some electrolyte water and eaten a little. The wound gets dried out fairly quickly (a couple hours) even with the ointment. Is there anything else I can do to help her? She’s so sweet, we are trying our best to save her.

I would apply the silver honey more often or alternate with plain neosporin triple antibiotic ointment. Was she attacked by other hens or a rooster trying to mount her? Is she low in the pecking order? She will recover from this injury with care, and I hope that she does well.

I’m not sure who did it as we have several roosters that were supposed to be pullets from the hatchery. 😞 Working on narrowing down to just 1 roo right now. We’ve been keeping a really close eye to try and catch the aggressor and watch for more victims. She doesn’t seem especially low in the pecking order but they’re still fairly young so I’m not sure how established that order is yet. Thank you for your advice! Going to put neosporin on her now!

I had a rooster that attacked another one and pecked the back of his head to the point where there were no feathers 2"x2". He was kind of in shock and I put hydrogen peroxide on top. Foamed up and then he left after a while. His head healed up and then started to have feathers growing back.
