sex determination of 4 week old Barred Rock chicks

When they lay on their sides and stretch out their wings, they're sort of "sunning" themselves. Just enjoying the heat. I think that if they were cold, they would be huddling together instead of stretching out.

Thanks everyone. I'm still holding out hope for Thekla because her feathers are darker...

I have a good home set up for Josie/Josiah once he gets bigger. I know I can't have two roosters in close quarters once they grow up.

I have also ordered 2 pullets (to arrive in Aug.) from McMurray hatchery (thanks for the tip). That way I'll have at least three egg layers. I'm only allowed 5 chickens in the city of Pittsburgh.

Hi everyone! I have a BR that I'm thinking could be a roo as well. Millie was supposed to be a pullet, but s/he seems to be growing faster than the our other chicken (an Orpington) and seems more rambuncous/protective. Her wattles and comb are now quite red. Here are some photos:

Update on this post! Turns out one of the three chicks was a boy, one was a girl, and it appears that one is a hermaphrodite! Thekla has features of hermaphrodite barred rocks, including feather color between male and female, early spur development. I had given Thekla to a friend who has a farm and was looking for a rooster, and she reports that all the chickens treat him/her differently than they would a male or female. Since our other rooster has moved there, they have gotten along well, no fights. Interesting!

Thanks for all this wonderful info. & pictures. I know this is an old thread, but it helped my peaked curiosity about 2 of my 9 BR's. I'm 90% sure one is a roo and about 60% sure another may be. 2 out of 9, well, I guess TSC's suppliers aren't as sure as they think they are.

Hmm, I'm going to get some pictures of mine. You guys are good at this sexing thing! I have 7 (supposed to be pullets) but a couple look different from the others. I don't know if its just variation or a rooster. Mine are 11 weeks old tomorrow.
