Sex-link question

Crossing a buff, red, BBR, black, or blue rooster with a barred/cuckoo hen will give a sexlink where the males hatch out black with the white spot on the head and the females will be solid black at hatching. The welsummer x maran cross will look just like other black sexlinks, some people have said that the roosters from that cross look more crele but I havent noticed a difference.
So to summarize- roosters will hatch out like a barred rock and will feather out barred with some red or gold in the hackle, saddle, and wing bow. Females will hatch out solid black and will mature to be from solid black to black with red/gold on them.

Hope that helps.

Ok, I have a question....hope no one minds me asking here.

Can you get a sex-link by crossing a barred rock roo over anything...like a RIR hen?

Thanks so much for the explanation. That helps out a lot. I appreciate it. It gives me some more ideas on where to go from here.

shelleyb1969- To my knowledge there aren't any sex-links that can be created with a barred sire.

ok so it seems as though you can use Cuckoo Marans as the hens only for sex links (please correct me if I am wrong I am trying to figure this all out and am having some difficulty even though I have searched and read MANY treads) So RIR roo with Cuckoo Maran would give what kind of sex link (black ones?)

A cuckoo maran roo would not produce sex links with any hens??

No. Sex linking does not work in 'reverse'. This has to do with an uneven distribution of genes between male and female. The male must be red for it to work at all.
