Sex- linked Information

Wait so what color chicks could I get, and how can I tell if they are sexable and how do I sex them if they are.....I'm sorry but all this stuff is confusing to me...I get the 'cross a barred hen and a red rooster(or any color besides barred) to get black sexlinks' and 'cross a red rooster and a silver hen to get red sexlinks' but that's about as far as my knowledge goes on sex-links...

Any chick that shows buff or a muddy chocolate color in the down will be female . May not be very dependable results as all females may not No barring involved in these .

show this . It has been awhile since I hatched a cross like this and at the time I did not realize they were sexable . Here are some adult pics from a few years ago . The hens were from recessive white hens based on black bred by a buff rooster .

So, if I'm understanding this right, the females will be buff or muddy brown. Will the males be blue or black because of the fact that the mom is blue? And is there a chance some will turn out barred once they feather in? I should be able to see the head spot if they do... If anyone wants I can post pictures of the soon to be parents--hopefully. I'm planning on hatching this cross out in the spring...if we get the new coop up in time. And this is technically a sex-linked cross, right? If it is then the males will be blue or black with no head spot since the mom is plain blue, and the females will be brown or buff and possibly barred from the dad??? All chicks will be barred if the rooster has 2 barring genes . All chicks will have blue or black from the mother . Blue is a dilution of black . Your blue hens is black first and 1 copy of blue makes her look blue . Technically sex linked for gold . A poor choice for good sexing but should work for most . A lot depends on the black genes or melanizers involved . Post some pictures when they hatch .

I won't be posting pictures until mid summer probably because I'm not going to be hatching until then. I was just looking at some colors I could get with my buff barred Cochin banty rooster...I would like to hatch more right now, but i don't have an incubator and I don't have a good warm area for a broody hen, plus I don't want to hatch any in the winter anyways, as it's too hard to integrate them, and I have too many in one area as it is, so I have to wait until the new coop is built, which won't be happening until next summer.....

Just to be clear, I'm expecting black, not blue, chicks. I like blue birds too and I have several blue egg laying blue sexlinks from last year's project. They are beautiful and lay beautiful eggs, but they were not sexable until about 2 months of age, when the hackle feathers of the males started showing the barring clearly.

My Am X BH cross worked great for the black chicks, at about 5 days, I could cull every male easily. Not perfect for selling/shipping day old's, but good enough for me since I generally sell the chicks at that stage or older.

This is when I really miss Marvin. he was kind of crusty, but he was great about explaining these things IMO.

They might sexlink, but it won't a black sexlink cross, it will be a red sexlink cross. And it will only work if the hen has silver 'hiding' under her blue 'pattern'. No way to really know until you try it. And they likely won't be sexable until they begin to feather in, not at hatching. If the hen is gold-based, then there will be no sexlinking.

RIR rooster or NH rooster over BR hen you get black sex link chicks. Roosters have white dot on head over totally black body. Hens totally black.

RIR rooster or Nh rooster over Delaware hen you get red sex link chicks. Hens will be lighter and roosters will be noticeably darker

You've got it right on the black sexlinks. But with the red sexlinks, it's that girls that are darker, and the boys that will be lighter.
